I want to know, whether Development is a part of Design or not.
Are design and develpement totally different areas?
If development always occurs after the design then what are their boundries?

Is it true that Design is paper or compter based and develoment is the production of first prototype?

Or devolpment is the improvement in an already desined product?

I need clear difference and bounderies of design and develpment as per requirments mentioned in AS9100 REV B Standard.

Thanks

Sohail

Working in the Printing business, I am wondering if PrePress design where we manipulate customer info onto printing press plates is considered to be Design & development as well.
At times we will take minimual info from the customer and "create" the finished look. Other times we take the customer files and with only a tweek here and there are able to get it imprinted onto the press plates.
I'd appreciate any feedback on this,
Thanks,
Becky

Sohail,

This may not help much from an aerospace perspective, but I prepared a presentation on verification and validation from a Change Control perspective using the Waterfall (Stair Step) analogy. I would say that the action of verifying and validating the design of a product or process would be considered development.

For what it is worth,
Doug

in my past life i was also in the printing biz.

I excluded Design from our QMS since we did not create artwork. We only processed customer provided art. In changing the artwork we always obtained an approval and sign off from the customer on each deviation.

I am working in same industry and we also excluded design from our QMS as we are not modifing any data, and if we are we would take sign off from the customer.

Sohail,

During the implementation of our quality system (we're a design and development firm) we excluded any activities from our QMS that was defined as "Pure Research".

We defined "Research" as those activities that were research-oriented projects and were not sufficiently mature to warrant applicability of our development process. In addition, most of our research activities were not sufficiently developed to identify any specific product that would result from these activities and would require extensive design refinement to reach the development stage.

Hope this helps.
