I am currently working on my masters in management and have reached a stopping point in an assignment involving total quality management. We are required to read a book on an important contributor to TQM and then compare his work to another contributer. Any reccomendations??

To your question, pretty much exactly what Duke quoted. Many here would probably consider Deming the Father of Modern Quality. His book Out of the Crisis might be a good start. Juran's Quality Control Handbook has some really great stuff.

Have you determined an angle you wished to take? TQM in general is a pretty huge field. Just some ideas...
Compare philosophies on performance measurement, SPC, reducing variance, management's responsiblity in the quality system, etc.

If you want a "readable" guru I would suggest anything by Philip Crosby.

I think you'll find "The Deming Management Method" by Mary Walton to be much easier to read. "Out of the Crisis" was written in bits and pieces and is somewhat difficult to follow.

Also, for your reference material, you can include one of my favorite titles "Company Wide Total Quality Control" by Shigeru Mizuno.

This book is a very informative and formative besides, it's very pleasent to read. I consider this one as one of the best titles you can find in the quality field.
