My previous employer was in the automotive climate control industry, and we had just obtained our TS certification when I left to join my current employer.

I think it depends on who your customers are. Our main customer was GM, and we were in the process of obtaining some Ford business, so we had to be registered TS.
Another customer was not TS, and really didn't care if we were or not.
