I am very new to ISO/TS 16949:2002 and I need some help understanding some of the ISO/TS 16949 clauses:

5.4.1.1 Quality Objectives — Supplemental
5.5.1.1 Responsibility for Quality
5.5.2.1 Customer Representative
5.6.1.1 Quality Management System Performance
5.6.2.1 Review Input — Supplemental

6.2.2.1 Product Design Skills
6.2.2.2 Training
6.2.2.3 Training on the Job
6.2.2.4 Employee Motivation and Empowerment
6.3.1 Plant, Facility and Equipment Planning
6.3.2 Contingency Plans
6.4.1 Personnel Safety to Achieve Product Quality
6.4.3 Cleanliness of Premises

I understand that this is a lot but I am just looking for a summary or a more detailed explanation of each clause.

Thank you for your time in advance

Blondie :)

Hello there Blondie! Welcome to the Cove!!

Question: do you have a copy of the requirement? That may be a good start.

Also, if you get a chance, it might help you to review the posts in this forum. There will be a lot of information towards your queries.

I anticipate that hopefully tomorrow there are some others that can assist with your query.

HI and welcome,

I don't really have enough time to go in too deep, but I have found that a useful way to understand the requirements of the standard is to think of each clause in the following way:

Clause 5 = Management Responsibilities and Activities.
Clause 6 = The management of resources.
Clause 7 = Product Realisation (the activities carried out to make product).
Clause 8 = Measurement, Analysis and Improvement.

If you look at the process approach then you will begin to understand which of each clause is covering which part of the process. Be careful though, the clauses can cover more than one area and are open to much interpretation.

I will cover one of your clauses as an example:

5.4.1.1 - A MANAGAMENT RESPONSIBILITY - This clause basically says you should have clearly defined quality objectives that you need to meet, both in terms of your customers expectations (so you should understand them well) and the needs of your business. This clause says that these must be documented as part of your business plan and they must have measures in place to determine they are effective.

An example could be "Reduction of Scrap by 20%". This must be a realistic objective, with a plan in place to achieve, a way of effectively measuring it and be communicated effectively throughout the organisation.

Also note that the NOTE is not simply guidance, it states that it should consider customer requirements and have a set time frame. It states a requirement!

Hope that helps on that one!

Blondie,

CQI-7 is an free TS implementation guide, avaliable on the AIAG website. It is a good starting place to get the intent of the standard. Application to specific business context you can get from the experts on The Cove, after you have a basic understanding.
