I have been in and around quality for long time but I had a question this morning asking what was Stage 1 Cp/Cpk and what was Stage 2 Cp/Cpk. I wonder whether it is know by name here in Europe.

The did a search on Stage 1 & Stage 2 Cp/Cpk and this was the only information (http://www.spctraining.co.uk/html/what_is_spc.html) I found even mentioning these to phrases. (you have to scroll about mid-page) Not sure if this is what you are referring to. Maybe another "Cover" has more insight on this....

Yes I found that on Google too but I don't think it is what my colleague was looking for.

I think maybe it is differnt process stages, so, it could be stage 1, 2 , 3, n. in a production flow.

OR

Maybe breaking down an existing process down into small stages in order to identify a problem root cause.

It would be nice to have a definite confirmation from someone who knows for sure.

Hello Alan,

I am guessing here, because I have never heard of the term. But could this be related the the Phased PPAP approach that Ford uses? I may be way off base....if so, please forgive me....

Could this shed some light? http://www.simple-quality.de/PPAP.html

Look in this thread: Ford Global Phased PPAP - A new Ford requirement? (http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?t=12133)

I'll continue to look for you..

Maybe, just maybe is Phase 1 and 2 of SPC.

This is excerpt from an article from "Controversies and Contradictions in Statistical Process Control" by WILLIAM H. WOODALL

... determine whether or not a process has been in statistical control (Phase 1) and its use prospectively with samples taken sequentially over time to detect changes from an in-control process (Phase 2). The use of control charts in Phase 1 is usually iterative. Much work, process understanding, and process improvement is often required in the transition from Phase 1to Phase 2.

It was free in Journal of Quality Technology, I tried to find it again (to give the link) without success. :(

Andrew C. Palm, said in those series of articles that instead of Phases, he saw stages and he saw 3 stages:

A- Chart Setup
B- Process Improvement
C- Process Monitoring:magic:

Hi Alan,

Because you live in Europe, and you used the term in English; could something been lost in the translation? Could you go back to the person that asked that question? I can relate to translation issues; I am from The Netherlands originally.

Years ago we had to deliver to Ford and they were asking for a " preliminary capability index " in the prototype and the pre- launch phase. ( because of the limited number of subgroups ).
They were also asking for the P.I.S.T. and P.I.P.C. numbers.

In the production phase we had to show the production Cpk.

Any chance they mean this ?

Best regards,

Antoine

Well Gentleman thank you for your replies.

I think Darius' answer is the most convincing but I am still not 100% certain. I will speak with my colleague over a beer this evening and see if it answers his question.

I don't know the context of his question. I expected to find so mention of Stage Cp/Cpk in one my numerous books in my office here but to no avail.

Hello Alan,

Aaaaaah! Over a beer! Yes, that should do it. No, no kidding....we look forward to hearing from you because we're intrigued by your question.
