View Full Version : Signatures - User Signatures in the forums - Limitations and Additions

The limit for signatures is two lines. On almost every post there is a line at the bottom of the post with additional words, probably from the author, below that. How do I add those catchy little quips and pieces of wisdom to my own posts?

--> Instruction Note Added by Marc: After a person here has about 10 posts, a 'signature' can be put in which shows at the bottom of each post the person makes. To put in a 'signature', go to your UserCP (http://elsmar.com/Forums/usercp.php) and look at the options in the left sidebar. One of them is labeled 'Edit Your Signature (http://elsmar.com/Forums/profile.php?do=editsignature)'.

I'm not sure exactly what you're referring to, but I must ask you to take the 'advertisement' out of your signature.

Default setting is: Registered Visitors with at least 10 posts get 2 lines, and Moderators get 3. A few users have special privileges for various reasons.

The reason the number of lines is limited is I do not want to clutter up threads with posts with people having a large signature.

NOTE: You must have 10 posts in 'business' threads before you can put a personal Signature in your Profile which will show up in your posts.

I just did a quick audit of various posts and found only one-- Steve Prevette's (http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?p=205912#post205912) --that contains more than two lines. I'm not sure how that happened (perhaps the two-line limit is newer that Steve's sig) but if you can't say what you need to say in two lines and 150 characters, it's probably too much information anyway. :D Less is more, when it comes to signatures.

As quick as I posted my question I had the answer. The two lines I see on others posts IS their signature. I was stuck in a rut of signature having to be, you know, signature: name and so on.

I'm all set now - thanks.

Yep, got that taken care of also - my bad - didn't realize.

Steve may have had his set before the software settings for that aspect were there. There didn't used to be any control for the number of lines in a signature.

Oh, I never had any complaint with the two lines - that is enough. I just had my own mix-up going on. I could only envision signature as a name. After looking at several others I realized what people have done. They count on the Elsmar provided identification at the top of the posting then add their words of wisdom at the bottom.

All fixed - thanks for the help guys.:)

And Steve is also a moderator, and thus allowed three lines, as you said in your earlier post. I wasn't aware of that. Not being a moderator, I was seeing the two-line limit.

The "signature" thing is common to most message boards, and most e-mail clients.

AM I missing something, but I don't see anyones signature on any posts, never have done! Not even my own.

The only place I see signatures is on peoples profiles and when I preview a post of my own. Once it's posted I don't see a signature!? Is there a setting somewhere? Just curious!

EDIT: It's OK, I see the settings in the options bit of my profile! It was unticked

Your signature is the quote in red at the end of your posts...It appears below the solid black line...:)

It's only red if you make it red.

I want to add a pic in my signature, how can i do this? To keep from taking up a lot of space in posts (thus being distractive) we don't allow graphics in signatures.

Sorry.

When I tried to change my signature recently the default message indicated I was allowed 1 line?

I see four in your sig, three with characters on them.

When I tried to change my signature recently the default message indicated I was allowed 1 line? There was an overlapping permissions set. Try now.

My current signature does have four lines - I was referring to the message I received when I attempted to revise my signature.

A while back I was looking at space taken up by signatures and how they could affect reading threads. At one time there were few restrictions. They were revised to keep the 'clutter' down so that threads are more readable.

You've been around for a few years so you put in a 4 line signature before the limitations were put in place.

If someone such as you has been registered for a while and wants an exemption from the current limitations, just PM me and I'll make the change if you need more than 2 lines.

I'll change the limitations if enough of you post here that you would like more room for signatures.

Personally I like the 2-3 line rule. We're here to read posts, help each other out, post questions...I don't come to read signatures. Sure there are cute ones out there, but keeping consider the current rule as a 5S issue. Is there any benefit to having longer signatures? Does it help communicate the content of the posts? Is there any value to a having a signature longer than the current rule?

Okay, I'm getting off my soap box. :notme:

It makes no difference to me. No one is forced to read signatures, so whether someone has a one-word sig or copies out Chapter 6 of Out of the Crisis is of no consequence, assuming that bandwidth isn't an issue. I just read the posts and move on.

Marc, I understand and agree with the need for some limitations. I was just curious about the fact that the message I was receiving when trying to change my signature did not seem to agree with the listed limitations.

2 lines is plenty - I enjoy the quotes that are part of some of the signatures and like to change mine occasionally when I come across something interesting or inspiring.

I'd be lying if I said every time I make 'an adjustment' to the software settings I update all references. I try to, but I miss on occasion.

I appreciate your pointing out the anomaly!
