We are looking for recommendations on equipment to measure long parts. The parts are anywhere from 6 to 8 feet long, 6 to 8 inches wide and are flat fabric material. I am thinking that a CMM would be more than we need for this and I am wondering if there is other equipment out there that would be less expensive than a CMM.

What characteristics would you be measuring?

This depends on your accuracy requirements and how you need to make the measurements. One option could be a precision ruler. Some of the major dimensional instument manufacturers (such as Starrett, Mitutoyo., etc.) have precision rulers available. And I believe you could get one as long as your requirement; then you could flush mount it in the work surface.

Are these parts subject to free-state variation? (Flimsy)

Basically we are measureing length, width, distance from point to point. Just the basics.
tolerances of 1mm to 5mm

From 1mm-5mm a simple tape measure would work.
What does the customer require? What are your Trim/Scrap fabric overlap allowances?
If you could elaborate a little mroe on the application of your product more of us could chime in.
