I did an Edit/Find on all the topics under ISO 9001/4:2000 and couldn't find the word 'notes' anywhere so I think I'm OK in starting a new topic.

Simple question: In the 1994 version I was always told that I could not be audited to the content of the notes scattered throughout the standard. Is this the same in the 2000 version? While I don't see much that would cause me concern, I'd like to know what the letter of the law is.

Since the Notes in the DIS 2000 version generally state CAN and MAY, they are for guidance. Some, however, are quite clear that they are translating the requirement (dare I say intent), 4.2 Note 1 is a good example where the NOTE is telling you exactly what "documented procedure" means. Ignore that one, and you're toast!

I know of at least one registrar that audits to the notes. It is a good idea to ask the registrar their practise re "notes" before you contract them to work for you (Contract Review).
