Hello!

I urgently need your help as to the following sect. of AS/EN 9100:

7.3.3 Design and development outputs
The outputs of design and development shall be provided in a form that enables verification against the design and development input and shall be approved prior to release.
Design and development outputs shall
..
..
..
e) identify key characteristics, when applicable, in accordance with design or contract requirements.

Can anybody of you help me how I can best explain to a group what this sections requires. Maybe you could also give me an example of what is to be understood by the term "key characteristics".

I am in a bit of a time pressure and any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Angelika,

I am not an AS/EN 9100 expert. However, I can give you some examples of definitions including ones used in the automotive industry. There may not be all that much difference. See my post + attachment (http://elsmar.com/Forums/showpost.php?p=205700&postcount=6).

I am sure that other Aerospace Covers will chime in.

These are typicaly "flowed down" to you by the customer.
They are identifed on the print or specification or SCD.
In the case where you have design authority you will identify them.

Key Characteristics is defined in Section 3 of the AS9100 B Standard as “The features of a material, process, or part whose variation has a significant influence on product fit, performance, service life, or manufacturability”. Other industries use terms such as special or critical characteristics.

In aerospace safety is often a consideration related to key characteristics and can be defined by your organization or the customer. Also key characteristics often have special controls associated with then such as SPC, special records and/or tests, special tools, special training for applicable personnel.

3. DEFINITIONS:

3.1 Key Characteristic (KC):

AS9100/EN-9100/JISQ 9100 definition: The features of a material or part whose variation has a significant influence on product fit, performance, service life, or manufacturability.

This definition is further explained as follows:

- Key Characteristics for a part, subassembly or system are those selected geometrical, material properties, functional and/or cosmetic features, which are measurable, whose variation control is necessary in meeting Customer requirements and enhancing Customer Satisfaction.

- Key Characteristics for a process are those selected measurable parameters of a process whose control is essential to manage variation of part or system Key Characteristics.

- Substitute Key Characteristics may be identified when a Customer-defined Key Characteristic is not readily measurable within the production setting and other characteristics may need to be controlled to ensure conformance.

This is referenced from AS9103, "Variation Management of Key Characteristics"

Dear All,

In clause 7.3.3, in my view clause have listed out all possible outputs, then can some body illustrate what is meant by "design features of the product". The complete statement is as follows:
- a listing of those drawings, part lists and specifications necessary to define the configuration and the design features of the product"

Please help me in understanding.

Regards

Ajay
