View Full Version : Who should decide on my salary and adjustments?

Yesterday, the HR manager approached me and said, “Congratulations, your performance during probation is remarkable. The company decides to raise your salary by 2,000 Yuan.” The GM is on holiday vacation.

The HR is not my supervisor, and I don’t report to her. So I don’t feel it right.

I report directly to GM. So I think only GM can decide my position and my salary.

How do you think?

It depends on the management structure of your company, and how whomever it is that actually controls the money wants it done. There might be practices in China that I'm not aware of, though. You should ask someone there about it.

I know. But do you think it right?

I am responsible for the system. If this practice will demoralize employees, I think I should try to change it.

I oppose HR appraise my work because she doesn't know my work. I don't send my report to her.

Do not be over sensitive. HR is generally a support function and it manages and regulate the HR aspects on behalf of other departments. They will not and do not decide on issues like promotion and increment amounts (except for their own department). These feedbacks are normally given to them by the respective people such as department heads. HR's job is to prepare the necessaries, update the files and records and inform the candidate through a nicely written letter (sometimes this letter is given through the person you report to).

If you are due for adjustment, HR's job is to remind your head or who ever you report to and he will give his recommendation. There is no requirement that he should be around and that recommendation could have been given weeks back

darkafar,

Harry has rightly pointed out.

Your GM would have finalized everything before going on leave and then forwaded to HR Manager to carry forth.

Even in our organization, all the communications come from HR. Like in case of "Organizational Announcement" to welcome the new employee, the respective Director prepares a short biography about the new employee and forwards to HR Director to do the necesssary circulation.

The promotions / dismissals are also submitted to HR and then, they do the finishing touches.

So, in your case also its absolutely valid. Accept the promotion and continue your good work. Donot get bogged down by thos issues. :D

Do the honorable thing and refuse to take it.

What does it really matter where the news comes from as long as it's good? This is like getting upset because everyone is getting $100 bills and yours isn't new.

If the HR manager has the right to state that and make it happen, don't give it another thought. There may be a multitude of reasons why it is occurring, but trust me, it would not be occurring if you did not have it coming to you.

They may have determined that your pay is significantly below what it should be for that job title, your pay increases were lower than it needed to be, etc. Too, since you were on probation, there might be a standard action of raising peoples salary a certain level when they come off of probation. Your boss may have called them and told them to do it. You never know.

I don't think I would be too concerned about the motivation of it happening. Just say "thanks", and tell your boss "thanks" when he/she comes back.
