Let me introduce a question related to calibration.
Whether it is required to calibrate device/equipment used for support services.
eg. to monitor the activities in electric substation, I use megger, but it is not related to my actual product/ or output of my plant.
Please send your view on above question.
Regards
Ajay

AjayWhat do you use the megger for, maintenance? There is no point in using a measurement device for any purpose if it's accuracy might be in question. You are only fooling yourself if you do.

Al,
I agree with you 100%. However, this is the 3rd time the OP raises this issue although the wording in the posts is slightly different. I believe that my Fellow Covers have adequately responded...or am I missing something?

I agree with Al's response on this one.
Many times calibration seems as if it has become this necessary evil; something that must be done to satisfy an auditor. Instrument calibration is part of the QMS because it is the correct way to do things. Calibrated instruments increases confidence that the instrument is working properly. Instruments can be working improperly and may not be noticed. An instrument can be slightly out of tolerance (OOT) and not be noticed; how much product is generated from that OOT instrument, and the impact?
In the case of the OP, what size/how many motors are being tested with that megger? How much is the risk of installing a bad motor you thought was good; or scrap a motor that is fine, because your megger read it was bad?
Now, there must be proper management of the calibration system. Using competent labs, proper tolerances, and most importantly, proper frequency, needs to be in place.
Personal observation: In reporting OOT equipment to users, only then am I told "Yea, I thought it was acting strange", or "I stop using it as I thought something was wrong", etc. 1) The instrument was not quarantined so others would not use it; several times others used it. 2) Not every potential issue is reported as timely as it should.
As far as the mandatory calibration of the megger, it depends on the regulatory body you work for (if any), your customer requirements, and your QMS (if any).

1. I moved the thread to the Calibration forum which I think is relevant.
2. I had encouraged the OP to start this new thread because he doesn't seem satisfied with the answers he had from the two threads started by him earlier.
3. To the OP, please indicate what you want instead of repeating the same question with minor changes here and there. There had to be meaningful exchanges for quality output to arise.
4. If your problem is that some Auditors disagree with you/your client, please state exactly what the problem was and what exactly the auditor said or wrote.
5. As many had responded, whether there is a need to calibrate or not is dependent on many factors (situational). Ultimately, common sense and good practice should rule instead of trying to depend on the 14 pages of 'guidelines' in ISO 9001 designed for the use of so many types of industry or business around the world.
6. Welcome and hope that you have a fruitful experience here.
