Hi Marc, I guess you just moved the 'Similar Discussion Threads' box to the top of each page isn't it. I prefer this arrangement for it allow users to have a view and/or take further actions before asking more questions.

What are the views of the others??

I thought I'd try it out. You can collapse it and it will stay collapsed in all threads as far as I can tell. I thought this might help some newer people, while 'regulars' can collapse it so it's not in their way, so to speak.

I moved this to the public forum because I'm open to feedback from everyone on the change.

I saw another forum where they did the same thing (not an original idea) and sorta liked it.

Your opinions?

Something is wrong. It's not showing to visitors at all.

Hang on - Doing some testing...

I like it. Looks like it is certainly worth a try.

How about the many posts that recommend to "scroll down the page" for "links on this topic/subject?"

Could this be confusing? Honestly, I liked the way it was.....

OK - Now, if anyone wants to help 'test', collapse the Similar Threads table and see if it shows on any threads after you do that. It *should* stay collapsed *unless* you are rejecting cookies.

Still testing. I'm playing with a php file. It's not working in Cmino, so for a bit here you may see the box or I may be back to the standard script while I test.

Please note, folks, this is the same 'Similar Threads' box that typically shows at the bottom of every thread page.

This is weird. I never noticed this before, but it appears the 'Similar Threads' list only appears to people who are logged in. I can't figure out why it doesn't show for visitors.

Well, this is just a thought. Your opinions are still sought. I'll probably be going to be pretty soon but will look at it again in the morning.

OK - I found out what I was doing.

1. For Similar threads to show, there is a 'test' for criteria. If there aren't any threads that meet the thresh hold, none will show. (See attachment). If you have recommendations on settings, by all means let me know.

2. The results will only show threads the person has permissions to view. This is the same as the forum search. For the most part this is not an issue, but, for example, no one but moderators will see search results of threads in the moderator's forum.

As I was testing, I had forgotten the 'relevance' computation which, as I said above, if not reached will not show anything.

And remember, if you collapse the table, it *should* stay collapsed.

Hi Marc,

I noticed that we now have the box both on top and below. Is it going to remain as it is? Users can choose to collapse either one of them!

Just testing. As was pointed out, it's the same as has been at the bottom. Since there are a lot of posts telling people to look down at the 'Similar Threads' the bottom one will definitely stay.

This is just to remind regular (and other, for that matter) visitors, you can collapse the table with the Collapse button and it will stay collapsed.

Marc,

That's a great compromise! Like it! :applause:

The bottom one can't be collapsed although there is a button to collapse it.

The bottom one can't be collapsed although there is a button to collapse it.OK - Same here now that I checked it out, but that is less important than being able to collapse the top one.

I'll see if I can fix that later today.

Marc,

On my machine, the top box is operable. "Expand/Collapse", no problem.

However, there is no bottom box, and when I hit "Expand" there, the top box expands.

Just some feedback.

Hi Marc,

Now I've found this post and been able to collapse the top one I'm happier.

I came back to work today, went to read up on what I missed over the break and thought I'd lost access to the discussions at first. I have to admit I opened a couple before I worked out what had happened. :o

My computer ( IT take note) takes a while to load the full page (discussions load slower than the rest of the page) and at first appears that there is only the similiar threads and adverts etc on the page.

Thanks for the great site, I get a lot of info from here that helps.

cheers

OK - Test over. I played with it a bit and to me it's a bit intrusive space wise. Not to mention the page load time complaint.

I prefer having the 'Similar Discussion Threads' box at the bottom, as before.

Yea, just since you're asking... I agree with Doug about it being at the bottom.

Do I prefer the Similar Discussion Threads at the bottom? Yes. But I can really see how advantageous it is to have for the new people or people who forget about the lovely Search function. Unfortunately, people who forget to do a search post their question and only then can they see that we've talked about this before.

Doesn't bother me having it near the top. I simply collapse it and expand it after I've posted something and wish to see similar material.
