View Full Version : European/ISO equivalents for ASTM Standards
Carrie11 9th January 2008, 07:59 AM Hi
Does anybody know of an easy way of finding out what the equivalent European/ISO standards are for a given ASTM?
tyker 9th January 2008, 09:35 AM Have you tried asking BSI.
You can search their website at:
http://www.bsi-global.com/upload/Standards%20&%20Publications/shop.html
Their enquiry desk on +(44) 0208 996 9001 is usually helpful but easily confused.
Carrie11 9th January 2008, 09:47 AM I've tried the BSI website and none of the standards I have are listed. I guess this means there isn't an equivalent?

You can't depend on standards being equivalent. Sometimes analogous is the best you'll be able to do, so if you have a requirement for an ASTM standard and want to substitute an ISO or other standard, you need to review both before making a decision.
tyker 9th January 2008, 09:50 AM The telephone option is still available.
Alternatively, if there's only a small number of documents involved, try posting details here and see if one of us can help.

What industry are you interested in? I know that the major plastics, metals and pipe suppliers and players have such information in their websites.

Hello Crainford,
Here is a tool (http://www.plastemart.com/Upload/literature/iso-astm.asp) that can help you (I hope...)
Just type in an ASTM number and the equivalent ISO standard pops up.
Let me know if this thing worked for you.

Carrie11 10th January 2008, 06:52 AM Hi
No, the tool didn't help but thanks anyway. I am in the textiles/body armour industry and these are the standards I am looking for a European/ISO equivalent or similar if anybody can help.
ASTM TM D 3884 Standard Guide for Abrasion Resistance of Textile Fabrics (Rotary Platform Double-Head Method)
ASTM G21-96:2002 Standard Practice for Determining Resistance of Synthetic Polymeric Materials to Fungi
ASTM D204-02:2002 Standard Test Method for Sewing Threads
ASTM D1683:2007 Standard Test Method for Failure in Sewn Seams of Woven Apparel Fabrics
AATCC 96:2004 Dimensional Changes in Commercial Laundering of Woven and Knitted Fabrics Except Wool
Thanks

Sorry that the search tool did not provide you with the equivalents you're looking for. There may not be any. So, why do you need equivalents? What's not good with using the ASTM Standards themselves? They're written in English....

Carrie11 10th January 2008, 07:43 AM I have to provide test results against these standards for a tender submission however I am finding it extremely difficult to find a test house in the UK who can test to ASTM standards

If you can't find a lab in the UK, would it be feasible to have these samples tested in the USA? It may be expensive, but your competitors bidding on this job may not have an alternative testing source either...

That's a pretty cool feature, unfortunately it only holds a limited number of standards. But the idea is good, and I hope somebody graps it (Are you listening ISO???) :)
Carrie11 10th January 2008, 07:54 AM I may have to get the samples tested in the US but I working to a tight deadline. Can anybody give me contact details of a lab in the US that can carry out these tests?
Gert Sorensen 10th January 2008, 07:58 AM You may also consider labs in Ireland, some of those are used to the ASTM standards. :bigwave:

Hello Crainford,
I started a search for you on: Fabrics Testing Laboratories in the USA (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Fabrics+testing+laboratories+in+the+USA&btnG=Search).
International Testing Facilities (http://www.dmoz.org/Business/Textiles_and_Nonwovens/Test_Facilities/).
Anything there that could help you?
Stijloor.
Carrie11 10th January 2008, 08:34 AM Thanks. I'll have a look.:thanx:
Mr Niceguy 10th January 2008, 10:08 AM If you have time to make contact then the relevant ASTM committee secretary or convenor will know if there is an exact ISO equivalent since they surely would have been a participating member of the ISO working group. It's not my field but this is what I found from the EN and ISO catalogs. There are a few related standards below that I extracted from the lists, but I don't know their degree of equivalence and maybe the organisation issuing the tender won't either, which would be the problem.

Carrie11 10th January 2008, 11:17 AM Thanks for that, I'll try to contact them. I think you are correct in saying that the organisation putting out the tender will not understand the equivalence (or not) of another standard which means I think I will have to bite the bullet and send the materials to a test facility in the States.:thanx:
