So we wake up yesterday and our Christmas tree had fallen over (yeah, it was still up - long story) so we spend the rest of the day getting the ornaments put away before the kids (6 & 2) try to 'help' too much, then the Packers lose and now this morning I have to drive through a foot of snow to get to work.

David,
What this means for us Covers "close to retirement age" is that we get to enjoy what we're doing now a little bit longer! :D :nope:
Stijloor.
Wes Bucey 21st January 2008, 01:43 PM If you think that is depressing, the stock markets in Canada have dropped over 500 points today. Am I depressed or what.Markets are dropping around the world, even those which thought they were independent of financial turmoil in the USA. Consensus of investors on a USA holiday (when the US marts are closed) seems to be general fear that USA is headed for a deep and prolonged recession. It will be interesting to all (and painful to some) to see what happens when the USA markets reopen on Tuesday.
bluepagen 21st January 2008, 02:34 PM Heard this on the AM news, but unsure why today is the Most Depressing Day of the year? Anyone have the answer?
ScottK 21st January 2008, 02:52 PM It's not a depressing day for much of Northern NJ and South Eastern NY.
Massive Super Bowl parties are being planned.

Something about you've had enough time to figure out you will not be following through on your new year's resolutions, the glow of the holidays has passed and this year is the same as every other has been. Studied some of this in a phych class once. same ol, same ol.

My wife made me take our tree down after Little Christmas, now that was a depressing day.
I see you wanted the Packers to win, I have to say I am happy to see the Giants make it without Tiki, now if they can beat the Cheatriots it will start my year off right.
The snow, well we have escaped it for the most part this year. I was watching the weather yesterday and about 45 minutes North of where I am they had 3+ feet by the time I woke up this morning.

Cheatriots how do you figure? Those action happened before the season began? And what was Bill doing the same thing 1/3 the good coaches have been doing for years except he got caught. It will be a great weekend watching yet another NY team go down to another great Boston team. ENJOY! :notme:
You can call them Cheatriots if you like but we just call them perfect :agree1: as in 19-0 perfect.
Scott Catron 21st January 2008, 05:56 PM Cheatriots how do you figure? Those action happened before the season began?
Nope. The Pats were recording the Jets' defensive signals during the September 9, 2007 game. This is against league rules = cheating.
Obviously the NFL felt strongly enough about this to fine Belichick $500,000, the Patriots $250,000 and dock the team their original first-round selectionin the 2008 NFL Draft. That's a pretty severe punishment, and casts a shadow over the Patriot's recent accomplishments.

The Giants' fan base has been doubled during the last 20 hours.....:D

which is true of any area that has any team make a championship game.
Don't worry, though - the Jets fans here still hate the Giants.

The Patriots have played an amazing season and won through the application of skill, intelligent play, and cohesive teamwork, anyone who has watched the games, fan or not, will admit they have had an impressive season that has nothing to do with cheating, certainly moreso for the Patriots as they have been under the microscope since that incident. Calling them cheaters is wrong.

I don't think that calling them cheaters is wrong--they got caught. Ascribing their success to what they got caught doing is another story.
RCBeyette 22nd January 2008, 10:12 AM I hate to say this, but I think one of my coworker's has the most depressing day of the year and it's January 18. Her grandfather passed away on January 18 and her father passed away on January 18, 18 years apart...this was several years back. Two of our coworkers had family members pass away on January 18, this year - one was his young son who was very ill and the other was a friend's father. Then this coworker (with the grandfather/father situation) makes some phone calls to suppliers, only to find out that one of them passed away in October, but she found out January 18. Then she goes home in the evening of the 18th to find out that a neighbour and a friend of her mother's have both passed away earlier that day.
Needless to say, next January 18, I'm avoiding her like the plague!
Jennifer Kirley 22nd January 2008, 10:25 AM Ack! What I heard was, this is the time frame when the credit card bill comes in and we figure out we aren't sticking to that New Years resolution after all.
I can only say that it was very satisfying to have started up a direct deposit account with $25 a week; thus no credit card bill this year. That's good, given the high cost of heating oil.
As for the rest--let us hope things calm down in the markets, may the best team win in the Superbowl, no one else dies  and everyone drive safely!
Benjamin28 22nd January 2008, 10:28 AM It's name calling based on an incident that is well in the past and has no bearing on the team's recent success....whether you call that right or wrong is up to you...but lets be realistic, they got caught doing something that most coaches in the NFL have done, as admitted by NFL veterans, so why don't we just belittle the entire professional sport and say the NFL is tainted alltogether so you're better off watching professional chess where cheating is less common.
psyched1 22nd January 2008, 10:42 AM The Patriots have played an amazing season and won through the application of skill, intelligent play, and cohesive teamwork, anyone who has watched the games, fan or not, will admit they have had an impressive season that has nothing to do with cheating, certainly moreso for the Patriots as they have been under the microscope since that incident. I'll give you that they got caught but it was the Jets who really needed help;)
No one can take away from what the Patriots have acomplished. 19-0 is remarkable in any sport. This in an age of salary caps and mega stars stealing from the public (like Randy did with the Raiders) or worst morally corrupt actions like dog fighting ruining a great sport.
I admire the way the Patriots players are taught to be part of the system and their individual skills are used not to mention the humble way they take a win. Its great to see a guy like Seau get a shot at winning a SB and go out a winner.
The Giants will be good competition (for a half :notme:) but player for player the Patriots have this one.
:(The sad thing is there are baby's born in Boston after the World Series that dont know what its like to be world champs. :D Brady and Co. will change that.
firefly1234 22nd January 2008, 10:54 AM Hello, this is my first post.
:bigwave:
I actually joined because I was interested in finding samples of scorecards (for compliance measurement) but this post caught my attention and I couldn't resist putting my :2cents: in!
According to an article in Britain's Independent on January 22, January 22 has been designated the most depressing day of the year. I quote:
"So welcome to "Blue Monday" - Monday, 22 January - officially designated by a psychologist as the most depressing day of the year. It has been singled out by Dr Cliff Arnall, psychologist and former tutor at Cardiff University, who has used mathematical equations to reach his verdict." I wanted to post the link, but I discovered on previewing, forum rules don't allow it. :(
The article gives a number of reasons why such as the last week in Jan having a combination of bad weather, Christmas debts, & broken New Year's resolutions... The worst day is a Monday because for people who work Monday to Friday - our bodies work on a 25 hour clock so when the weekend comes we stay up later and then are tireder Monday morning and wake up grumpy....
The article also recommends rather tongue in cheek I think not to listen to "Monday, Monday" by the Mamas and the Papas and "I don't like Mondays" by the Boomtown Rats.
Personally, I think Bob Geldof says it all in "I don't like Mondays"!!!!

Brizilla 22nd January 2008, 11:11 AM Hello Kirsten and welcome to the Cove.
I don't make New Years Resolutions.
I don't have almost any Christmas credit card debt. We pay for almost everything with cash.
We took down our tree the first weekend in January but try to keep Christmas in our hearts all year round.
Bears fan - nuff said.
Hope the Patriots go perfect so we NEVER have to hear about the Miami Dolphins and their last team to go undefeated parties ever again.
Life's pretty good and there is no reason not to make January 21st ROCK! :agree1:

As long as the Jets and Giants are not playing eachother I have no problem with the Giants.

You really think Bellicheat turned over all the tapes he had. If so I have a bridge for sale cheap.

They got caught, fined a total of $750,000 and docked a first-round draft pick, but calling them cheaters is wrong? Get real. :lmao:
But what do I know, let's see what others think: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1896294/posts
"Every time the Eagles rushed Brady in the Super Bowl, the Patriots nullified the defensive attack with screen passes. Lots of them. On almost every play defensive coordinator Jim Johnson called for a blitz, the Patriots used the short pass to confuse the Eagles."
"Now there's always going to be questions about the situation," Dawkins said Thursday. "Was it great adjustments at halftime or what?"
"Pittsburgh wide receiver Hines Ward said this week that he suspected the Patriots had some type of inside information on the Steelers before at least one of the teams' two AFC championship game matchups since the 2001 season."
They've lost all my respect. Go Giants.

Benjamin28 22nd January 2008, 01:55 PM Ah well, I don't visit this site to argue about sports... Anyway, I'm a Giants fan and will be rooting for them..as for the season, like I said, and most others agree, watching the Pats play this season has been impressive and I'm looking forward to watching the last game and I believe both teams have earned every right to be there! Nice to see the Giants have yet another seasonal fanboy, go buy a hat and jersey quick for the game!

Ahhh... come on mom! All the kids are doing it!!:tg:
Seriously.. I am sure that there are plenty of others out there doing it. And... in the grand scheme of things it is not that bad to me. However, making childish statements does not sit well with me. Take some responsibility and move on.
My disdain for Patriots comes with the character of Tom Brady, and the personal choices he continues to make. I do not believe you can separate the private person, and the on-field person. Just a personal thing with me:D

$500,000 for the coach is a lot of personal responsibility. A first round draft choice was also pretty stiff. We will just have to make do with the 7th overall from the 49ers :lmao:
Benjamin28 23rd January 2008, 12:51 PM What's depressing is how heavily favored the Pats are in this game lol...I of course realize what the Giants are up against but I have to hang onto the hope that Eli can pull some tricks out of his pocket....if nothing else it's been a good season watching him progress from satisfactory to good, and along with him the Giants have had a good fun season.
I plan on hunkering down for a great superbowl party with tons of food, friends, and enjoying the game, if the Giants lose maybe I'll join the choir of folks hollaring "cheatriots" :notme: like my friend the die hard Raiders fan and all around trouble maker. For now though I don't think I'll travel that pitiful train and will instead appreciate the skill it takes from the folks who are actually out on the field playing the game.
Brad, it's not like he's whacking babies with a bat in his offtime...I could see not liking the guy if he was doing something outright terrible, but from what I've seen the worst that can be said of him is he's human and makes mistakes....
