Back in the early 80's yours truly and two friends spent our lunch breaks playing chess (or something like it  ) on a board like the one in this picture:
http://www.myconfinedspace.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/mp_cc_three_players_chessboard.jpeg

I don't know where I got the idea, but one day I made the board from a piece of scrap wood, and our lunch breaks were not the same for a long time: It quickly turned chess into a spectator sport, because as you can probably imagine, every game ended in absolute mayhem! ;) :notme: I had forgotten all about it, but a post on another site jogged my memory and made me see if I could find something similar to my setup on the web. To my amazement I did... I suppose that goes to prove that mine is not the only twisted mind around.

Love it!!!!

I made a four way board with sliding and swiveling half boards that was a lot of fun. A friend introduced us to a 3 dimensional game but I don't think that was an original idea. The sure provided us with hours of fun though.

I really like the one you made. I wish it was available commercially :applause:

/ClaesI also see a commercial market - not big, but big enough to make it worthwhile to explore creating economy and deluxe versions. An absolutely ideal internet business!

Can't all the Cove readers absolutely imagine the thrill Claes will get as he seeks to outsource the building (manufacture) of the product and implements his Quality requirements?

In fact, I can envision Claes making the rounds of major TV talk shows to pitch the product. I can envision him trading quips with TV hosts ranging from Oprah to Jay Leno to Graham Norton!

See me offline for some investment funds, Claes!

An absolutely ideal internet business!I'm afraid that market has been pretty well reined in already. Alas, I think we are some 20 years too late, and even then I am also not so certain that nobody else had thought about this before I did. Anyway, the set in the picture is in fact sold commercially.

My original set is long gone. It produced many laughs, groans and a few outbursts. :D Imagine for instance passing the center point of the board diagonally... Which diagonal are you going to follow?

Fascinating idea! I was introduced to chess when I was in grade six and remember winning my first game. Granted, the competition has become more fearsome (and yet scarce) over the years and I find that a long game is unable to hold my interest. This board might be a solution to that problem...besides, 3 people playing...the more the merrier!

I figure once you pick a direction with your pawn, you're pretty much committed to going in that direction, so strategy is a big factor in this version.

I remember seeing 3D chess in Star Trek and thinking it was absolutely fascinating. The training of the brain to see the bigger picture and think in multiple directions is something I've not yet managed to get a handle on. :(

I bought this [Hoyle Board Games] on CD:

http://www.hoylegaming.com/product.asp?id=1375

and Chess is one of the games featured. I also have the Hoyle Casino and Hoyle Puzzle games - I can play the puzzle games for hours!
