View Full Version : Competence Evaluations - Small machine shop

I work for a small machine shop and we are trying to get ISO 9000 certification. We only have seven employees and want something simple. What are other small shops doing to cover this?

I just signed up to this forum yesterday, and am still learning how to get around in it, but looks like a lot of good information here.

I have been dealing with QS/TS for the past several years and I always felt what we did there was to complex.

Any help would greatly helpful

Thanks in advance

To satisfy the competence/effectiveness requirements of ISO 9001:2000 (Clause 6.2.2), an organization will typically need to do several things:-
¨ Identify what competencies are required by personnel performing work which affects quality
¨ Identify which personnel already performing the work have the required competencies
¨ Decide what additional competencies are required
¨ Decide how these additional competencies are to be obtained – training of personnel (external or internal), theoretical or practical training, hiring of new competent personnel, assignment of existing competent personnel to different work
¨ Train, hire or reassign personnel
¨ Review the effectiveness of actions taken to satisfy competence needs
¨ Periodically review competence of personnel

The easiest way to start is to establish skill matrix. There many forms in "Post File Attachment List" that were generously shared by our fellow Covers. Use this link http://elsmar.com/Forums/fileslist.php?mode=allfiles&sortby=filename&pageamt=2&criteria=skill to find examples.

Good Luck!!

First of all.....

Welcome to the Cove!!!!! :bigwave:

The standard tells you what you have to do....just not how to do it. The question you have to answer is: "How do you know who can do what job?" In a small machine shop the answer is quite often is that you just know. With only a handful of folks it is not hard to keep track of who can do what. So, then how do you formalize that (assuming you have to formalize it). A matrix showing tasks, and who is "checked off" on those tasks is a standard way to do things. Make sure you include those office personnel that can affect product quality as well.
