Hello again!

I am about to improve my training documentation for an EN 9100 training and there is again a requirement that I do not really understand. In my opinion, the German translation of the standard seems to be wrong, however, I do not really understand the meaning of the English version either:

- the design, manufacture, and use of tooling so that variable measurements can be taken, particularly for key characteristics, and..........

Can any of you explain in your own words the meaning of variable measurements in this context?

There are 2 types of data:
Attribute: yes/no go/nogo etc
Variable: measurable in terms of giving a number as a result the weight is XXg, the length is 0.xx cm etc

There is also count (1, 2, 3, etc.) data that should not be confused with variable data. It is analyzed differently.

In this context, variables measurement means a measurement where you get some actual data, like length say 22.254 mm.

This is different to attribute measurements , also known as 'go/not go' which can be used to determine a result, but it can't be usefully used to detect trends in size variation, for example.

Hello Angelika,

A variable is something that can be expressed in a number.
An attribute has two possibilities: good or bad, pass or fail, present or absent, etc.

There are subtypes to each of these:

Variable
Discrete or count data such as days of backlog
Continuous
Attribute
Binary or Yes/No data
Categorical or data broken into groups
Nominal (order is not important such as male/female)
Ordinal (order is important such as good/better/best)
This is important because the method used to analyze each type differs. For example you can use an XMR chart to analyze continuous variable data, but should use a c-chart to analyze discrete variable data in most situations.

The statement below was written by Dale Gordon, Who was active in the writting of AS9100 and his translation of the above requirement in section 7.5.1.

This acknowledges that the tooling decisions (including gauging) are part of the product realization process. This does not apply only to key characteristics, but to all features, as appropriate. Continuous improvement is greatly facilitated when actual measurements can be taken, rather than "go-no go" measurements are taken. This says that when planning the tooling to be used and the corresponding measurement process should allow
for the capture of the actual measure to the necessary degree of accuracy to determine the process capability. This is required for key characteristics.
