View Full Version : Pandora Radio - streaming *your* music
Tim Folkerts 25th February 2008, 12:34 PM There is a website I recently discovered at pandora.com
You can create your own "radio station" to hear the music you like. At the simplest level, you type in a favorite artist or song, and the site creates a unique playlist based on that choice. For instance, I started with "James Taylor" it is has recently played America, Bob Seger, Paul Simon, and Stevie Nicks (as well as Jame Taylor).
You can customize the list, but so far I haven't felt the need. For example, you can give a thumbs up or thumbs down to particular songs. You do need to register, but there does not seem to be an advertising.

ScottK 25th February 2008, 12:47 PM I love Pandora - I've got stations set up based on 80's New Wave, Industrial music, punk, rockabilly, and electronic/big beat.
And there is no streaming advertising - the advertising is done in the player window.
I used to use Yahoo's music player but got annoyed with an ad every 5 songs.

I agree, Pandora is great - the more you use it the more tailored it becomes to your preferences. I have learnt about several new bands through it, for which I am very grateful - it means I don't have to listen to the advertisement-packed horror that is British commercial radio.

Kwilson 25th February 2008, 05:00 PM I too, love pandora, but our I.T. gestapo here at work have recently blocked it. I'm not too happy about that, but I still use it at home.

I'll bet their excuse was "it uses too much bandwidth"
errhine 25th February 2008, 06:03 PM That's the excuse my IT uses. Not the fact that the System was set up for 20 computers in the 80's and never upgraded.....
Randy 25th February 2008, 07:37 PM That's neat, I'll have to check it out.
Right now I'm listening to some early "Prince" - When the Doves Cry. I just got finished with Purple Rain, Red Corvette, 1999 and some of my other favorites of his (Believe it or not)
I like "my" music and it ranges from some of the Vivaldi, Albioni and of course Amadaus to Prince, Kiss, Black Sabbath, Beach Boys, Temptations, Jan & Dean, Turtles, Eagles, Carpenters, Doors, Marvin Gaye, and the olther great stuff from the 50's - 70's and early 80's. I can't leave out Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Williams, Randy Edelman, Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Kitaro, Vangelis and othe great tunes and writers.
I'll check Pandora out.
Thanks.

I would love see Pandora try to adapt to your eclectic tastes - the ultimate challenge!!
Randy 26th February 2008, 01:28 PM I love most music because I am not musical. I'm not a real fan of Country-Western (some, but not a lot). A good friend on mine turned me on to Middle Eastern/Arabic many years ago. Mike (Muhammed Abdin) was a Palastinian who imigrated to the US in the early 50's from Jerusalem. Mike always had "his" music playing in his jewelry store and in his car. It was lively and fun to listen to and though I didn't understand it I found that I liked it. Mike's gone now, but I still have a couple of cassettes he gave me.
Kales Veggie 26th February 2008, 01:34 PM Kewl beans. I have to try this.
Long nights in the lonely hotel. Presidential primaries getting ugly. Tired of reruns on TV. I am looking forward to listening to some good classical music and good symphonic rock.
Benjamin28 26th February 2008, 02:05 PM I've been using Pandora for over a year now, absolutely love having a radio station with no commercials which introduces me to new bands and new music. It's great if you don't want to carry your mp3 collection around in an ipod, and it's free, can't beat that.

I also have my Don McLean, Moody Blues, Roy Orbison, Beatles, Motown favorites and "Bubble Gum"music

One time, for giggles I set up a station with the following bands as seeds:
Britney Spears
Slayer
Dead Kennedys
Skinny Puppy
Michael Jackson
Amy Grant
Spyro Gyra
Reverend Horton Heat
Got some interesting music back, but usually it was just something from one of the genres of the above artists.
psayers 26th February 2008, 03:49 PM It must be nice to be able to use it but for now non US get this message. Perhaps in the near future it will open up to the rest of us to use and enjoy.
See quote from Pandoras home page.
"Dear Pandora Visitor,
We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative."

Unless you can sneak in using a US based VPN account, that works........ allegedly;)
Kales Veggie 26th February 2008, 09:07 PM Tried it...
What a wonderful website. Jamming away here.
Gail Former 27th February 2008, 02:43 PM Much as I love the concept, using Pandora with DSD (damned slow dialup) does not appear to be an option.
Tried it last night with less than satisfactory results.
If anyone knows a way to make it work out here in the boonies where we are on two tin cans and a string, please let me know!

Gail,
Living in "the boonies" as you call it, has many advantages. Fast internet connections is not one of them. :nope:

I don't know how fast it is... but you can get satellite internet service.
apparently you upload via dial up and download via satellite receiver.
It's marketed to rural areas.
just a thought.

Get a friend in the city to listen to Pandora with your music choices, and hum the tunes into their tin can, and voila the music appears in your tin can - problem solved.
If that doesn't work, then the satellite idea might be your best bet.

Gail Former 29th February 2008, 02:47 PM That might work if I had any friends who lived in town!:biglaugh:
I have been looking at various satellite systems, but haven't found anything that fits yet. Any suggestions?

Not I. I'm a suburbanite so I never looked that deeply.
Might I suggest you start a new thread in the Computer and internet (http://elsmar.com/Forums/forumdisplay.php?f=98) forum? There may be some people here who have used satellite internet or even work in the industry.
