I found Block Island in Rhode Island to be nicely relaxing, good night life, nice beaches, and plenty of fun in areas within two hours drive (once you take the hr long boat ride to the main land that is). Newport is right close, with great nightlife there as well, great seafood too! You have the casino nearby, Foxwoods or Mohegan (Mohegan has great seats for concerts), there's also Mystic Seaport or Mystic Aquarium for the kids or Mystic Village for the wife (more little shops).

Shameless plug for home state: NC Beaches were voted the best of the best last year...haven't seen the 08 ratings. Cannot hardly go wrong anywhere along the coast, outerbanks, ocean side, or sound side. ;)

You want a Beach Adventure?

I was in the Marine Corps for almost 12 years, do you really want to know?

Seriously, the Norther California Coast and Washington coast are fabulous. If you really want some adventure and a change there is always American Samoa...not a whole bunch of tourists, but great beaches and friendly folks as well.

Locals always know the best places.
If I could only visit one NC beach in this lifetime, which would you pick.

Thats a Marine for ya. He wants info on the east coast and the marine gives him info on the west coast, he dosen't know where he is going without the army to show him.:D

I only really know the NJ Shores...

There's always Atlantic City if you place high value on a boardwalk.
Point Pleasant Beach is OK but it's more family oriented.
Wildwood used to be nice, but I haven't been there in years.
Then there's Cape May which is really nice, but I don't know how much fun it would be solo.

If I was going to the NJ Shore solo, I'd likely do AC.

Unless American Samoa is on the East Coast, I probably won't get there this year. I think I just need some sun shine after a rather dark western Pa. winter.

Water temp in the Pacific anywhere north of Malibu is for much hardier folk than I.

Of course, I am thoroughly freaked about Australian water after seeing a Discovery Channel show about some itty bitty jellyfish (Irukandji) that are frequently fatal to humans unlucky enough to encounter them.

Wes you ought to give the water in Maine a try. I remember swimming there with my brothers in the spring...our folks limited us to 1/2 hour sessions because we would start turning blue skinned if we stayed in longer than that :biglaugh:

On the positive side it was a cool beach, near Acadia National Park. The beach itself had no sand, just round softball size rocks that would make a smooth clacking noise when the waves pushed em up and pulled them back. We'd throw on our snorkel gear and collect different variants of sea creatures there, ah them were the days :D

How about Destin, Fla? Nice beach and clear blue water.

I'm trying to leave the overcast, cold and damp western pa. area!
I was hoping for something just a little warmer than the north alantic.

Honestly Doug, if you're just looking to relax in the sun with a white beach, warm water and good drinks, I'd suggest an all inclusive in Mexico. With airfare included I spent a week there last summer for $1450 per person, quite affordable, all drinks/meals included and it was completely relaxing, felt like I was really able to forget every single worry in the world for a full week :D

There is no doubt I would enjoy Mexico. I don't know if I would come back!

When you're in the Pacific Ocean, California and Washington beaches are to the East.

Being a group of islands American Samoa has Eastern beaches.

Well, it kind of depends on what you are looking for, but from your previous description, beach bum, I would say anywhere from Manteo North to VA Beach VA. (excellent board walk there, a little more populace) I enjoy Kitty Hawk and Nags Head, Grave Digger monster truck home, all sorts of red-neck entertainment. Good fishing at Oregon Inlet. Wild ponies at Carolla. You can cover a lot of territory (culturally/entertainment wise) along the outer banks and it's all close for driving. July 4 is wall to wall, beach towel to beach towel. If you are trolling for babes, it's nearly impossible to miss. LOL!;)

I'm not really a beach bum, but I enjoy the beach, especially early morning before the clam bake starts. certaintly NOT a red neck. How about Ocracoke?

SteelMaiden

I like that area too. Lots going on, good food and drink. I don't get there as often, it's a little further drive for me...like yeah, what's an extra few minutes, lol, I just explore all up and done the OBX. It's all close for me. The furthest I would have to go to get home is probably 2 hours.

http://www.outerbanks.org/

Here's one of the websites with some info about what is where. You'll find lots. I'm more into the history of the areas I vacation to, and there's a lot of history here what with Roanoke Island and all the rest. Enjoy!

Thanks, Ocracoke is starting to sound like a place I need to visit.

Try Florida.

Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin, Florida
Fort DeSoto State Park, St Petersburg, Florida

Caladesi Beach - Americas number 2 beach in 2007
Fort Desoto Beach - Americas number 1 beach in 2008

Also close to Busch Gardens and Orlando.

When I was a kid (no laughing, please) I went to Holden Beach, North Carolina and it was great. Not sure what it is like today - anyone from NC have any input???

Sorry, I haven't been there yet....remember, I'm a transplant...a d____d yankee according to my newfound friends and neighbors....even though I've never lived in "yankee" territory. If ya ain't from aroun' heah, you must be a yankee.

little_cee,

We (my wife and I) have been visiting Carolina Beach, NC for over 20 years.
Very family-oriented and there's nothing like the Myrtle Beach, SC type entertainment there.

I can recommend a family-owned motel if you wish. Send me a PM.
