I know for many locations 8 to 12 inches of snow isn't a lot, but for Cincinnati it's a lot.

That would be the end of life as we know it for at least a month in the UK, 2 cm is enough to bring the country to its knees for a whole day!

I guess I will have to post a picture of the 6ft snowbanks on either side of my driveway. We are now waiting for the 2nd wave of a snowstorm that is expected to drop a minimum of 12 inches (as high as 18 inches expected).

We also had 5 inches on Tuesday. (yes we could have 2ft of snow in one week)

IF this snowfall reaches the expected minimum we will break a 70 YEAR RECORD for snowfall in Toronto. When Canadian cities start to set records you know there has been a tough winter!

Going to go shovel the 1st wave now (4 inches).

I was born in NC and lived there until I was about eight years old, and recall schools being closed after a 2-3" snowfall. This winter in southeast Wisconsin has been the worst in many years--in excess of 70" of snow so far, more days where the temperature didn't rise above freezing than I can ever remember. The biggest snowfall (so far :mg:) was 14 inches:

Uh... Jimmy, that sounds like Texas too!

I've lived here all my life, but go figure- Wednesday I was out at lunch playing outdoor volleyball, Thursday they called work off early due to heavy snowing, and yesterday (Friday) it was cooler that Wed. (no V-ball) but nice sunshine and no clouds.

Don't know if you guys have seen the video of the guy on his balcony taping cars on the icy road. By the angle, it's hard to tell how steep the road is, but it must have some angle to it. There are three-four cars that just.... well.... it just becomes a demolition alley:D.

Marc,

In NC, schools (and many businesses) close with even a chance of snow. Before that, there's a traditional run to the stores for milk and bread.. I have yet to figure this out...

We are up to 14 inches of snow and still counting in Westerville, Ohio (northeast Columbus). The winds are picking up and causing drifts that are much higher. If the snow keeps coming this could be as bad as what I experienced in the 1978 blizzard. I thought that was going to be my once in a lifetime blizzard but this could be another one to talk about with the grandchildren.

Ah, the winter of '78/'79. Here's a picture taken outside my house in Chicago in January of 1979:

I had to look outside after seeing your picture. We are still under blizzard conditions here in Toronto. They are forecasting that the "core" of the snowfall will occur between now and midnight (it is 8pm now).

We have had so much snow that I can't even send my dog to the backyard (too deep!). So I get to walk him outside. The drift in my driveway will not allow me to drive the cars out!

Oh well - I am in Canada.:biglaugh:

It's early morning, so my memory may fail me.... As far as I can recall we have had one day of snow this winter, and we got almost two inches :mg:
Well, that's Denmark for you.

We ended up lucky here. Only about 10 inches fell, and saturday afternoon the sun even came out. I have a small single stage snow blower that's about 10 years old. I don't remember the last time I used it, but it started up right away. Being a single stage it doesn't work well except in 'dry' snow, which this luckily was. I did have to clear the main drive (see my pictures from about 7 am saturday in first post) 4 times to 'keep up' with the snow, but it was a pretty short job.

Ya'll need to get done with that snow stuff. I'm gonna be in the Cincinnati area in a couple weeks and I expect it to be warm and dry.

I figure it can't last the week if the predicted temperatures are near the mark. A lot of it is already melting. My driveway is dry where I used the snow blower. Streets are dry already. Sunny out all afternoon today, and some this AM. My outside thermometer says 42 degrees right now.

My outside thermometer says 42 degrees right now.Friday night and Saturday morning, my neighborhood caught a spate of "lake effect" snow (4-1/2 inches!), but it was so light and fluffy, I blew it off with the LEAF BLOWER, not the snow blower. I estimate the water content was only 2 or 2-1/2 per cent. Far cry from the previous week where we had six inches of heavy, wet snow which kept clogging the snow blower. I estimate the water content of that snow was 10 or 15 per cent. (Good packing for snowballs and snowmen, but definitely a heart attack waiting to happen for some "weekend warrior" who spends the rest of his time competing for Couch Potato of the Year.)

Well, the tale of tape has come out.

At Pearson International Airport (Toronto airport) - 6"

Where I live in a Toronto suburb - 16" - oh ya and a snowplow that leaves 3 ft of snow at the end of your driveway that you took 3 hours to plow. Tax dollars at work (ironically the same week that they send this year's tax bill to us)

Yep - I have snowbanks the height of the family minivan on either side of my driveway. Right now there is no prediction of any snow for the next week..:truce:

Good night all

Fortunately I was just north and west of the snow belt when it went through Indiana, so we only got an inch. Unfortunately, I had rescheduled the sheep shearer from that last storm that came through two weeks ago that left my sheep looking like ice balls. This time he got the snow - 14 inches and they shut down all the roads where he lives. Let's hope this coming weekend is clear and dry both places!

When I first moved to Indiana from West Michigan, I really missed the snow. Not any more!

I was in Colunmbus a few years ago, and landed when there was about 6" of snow. The city was pretty much shut down. They ended up with 14" by the time the storm went through. The plant I was supposed to visit shut down before I had landed, so I had a free day. Too bad a lot of businesses were closed due to the weather! I was laughing about the whole thing... I'm from Nebraska, and have driven through more blizzards (yes, real blizzards) than I can count. Most places around here don't shut down for snow - ever.

:lmao: Doesn't always work that way, the year I was transferred we got a foot of snow here. Unfortunately with only one snow plow for the entire eastern NC area, it doesn't take much snow to make a big mess.

yes, why do North Carolinians buy all the milk and bread up at the first forecast of snow? I can think of lots of things more fun to eat or drink if I'm stuck at home.;) Fortunately, since I've switched to soy milk, and whole grain breads, I don't have that problem any more. You don't catch too many true NC's eating that kind of frou-frou food.

Moira,

Yes, eerily so!

I think Misery was the movie with all the snow. Misery would be so appropriate no?

My dad lives in Windsor and came up on Sunday for my daughter's b-day party (she turned 3 so still a big deal). He said that there was more left on the road here than fell in Windsor! Good thing though...he isn't a spring chicken anymore and that would have been a lot for him to shovel!

Now the quick spring thaw will cause an undue number of flooded basements!

I guess I'm callous, but being born and raised in Buffalo, I have no sympathy for anyone that get's less than 3 feet a night. We got over 2 feet at my house Friday/Saturday, so I packed up the family and went out, that's the best time to go shopping, or whatever because most people stay home. It's no big deal if you're used to it and prepared for it. On the other hand, I'm sure if we got a tornado/hurricane/earthquake (we did have one the other day, 2.5) we would be going crazy because that's not something we get regularly.

Go out and have some fun in the beautiful white stuff.

We did end up with 20 inches of snow but since it was on the weekend did not cause many problems.

Considering the flatness of Columbus, it is amazing how a few inches of snow stops everything. There has been much criticism of the local weather forecasts for over-hyping of snow, floods, heat, drought or whatever weather type you want to add. Listening to them, you would think that we are seeing the end of the world as we know it whenever we have any variation in weather.

Yesterday (the first day of spring), under a clear blue sky, I noticed that tulips, daffodils and peonies were sprouting in the yard. It was a welcome sight after a long, snowy, cold winter. This morning we have this:

The weather service says it could be as much as 15" before it's finished, with the heaviest amounts where I live.

Another "up to 5 inches" here in Minnesota today.:frust:

On the first full day of spring, a winter storm is dumping as much as 10 inches of new heavy, wet snow on parts of southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

The snow started falling overnight and is falling in some areas at a rate of more than an inch an hour. Burnsville, in the southern part of the Twin Cities, reported 8 inches of new snow at 9 a.m. Friday.

A winter storm warning is in effect for much of southern and southeastern Minnesota, including the southern and western part of the Twin Cities metro area. A snow advisory is in effect for areas just to the north.

WCCO-TV meteorologist Chris Shaffer expects snow totals in the immediate Twin Cities metro area, St. Cloud and Alexandria to be 2-6 inches. Areas just to the south and west of the metro area could see 6-10 inches of new snow. Those areas include Rochester, Burnsville and Willmar.

Shaffer said isolated areas could see more than 10 inches of new snow.

I don't know what the official total was, but this morning I had to cut a path through 15" of snow for the dog. This puts us close to 100" for the season--the average yearly snowfall is about 35".
