View Full Version : Oxygen Cleaning and Surfactants used for leak detection

I hope there's a few people here who are familiar with cleaning for O2 service and/or chemistry

We're having a huge fight here about leak detectors and parts that we clean for O2 service. It's currently hinging on Swagelok's "Snoop".

The MSDS states "Water and Surfactant".
The debate is whether the surfactant contains hydrocarbons because if it does we can't use it after the parts for our assembly are cleaned for O2 service.
Haven't been able to get further information from Swagelok.

Can anyone shed some light on surfactants and whether they commonly contain hydrocarbons. I thought they were usually salts.
Wikipedia has a list of common surfactants but chemistry was my worst subject in college. My understanding of "hydrocarbon" is something made up of only carbon and hydrogen.

Also - if a this "surfactant" had a hydrocarbon wouldn't it have to be called out separately on an MSDS?
