View Full Version : Show us what you make or Tell us what you do!
MysterHK 9th April 2008, 12:37 PM We, here on the Cove, come from such diverse manufacturing/service disciplines and I thought maybe this might be a good opportunity for everyone to show us some of the things that we make/do from our respective employers.
Here are a few samples from mine:
Manix 9th April 2008, 12:59 PM Thanks for sharing, some interesting parts there. I would love to, but I think it is probably more than my jobs worth to post pictures here! I have attached a generic picture that I have just randomly selected from those available. It is actually an animated gif but not sure if it will animate in every one's browser.
We also do interior automotive trim and other audio peripherals.
Steve Prevette 9th April 2008, 01:14 PM We don't necessarily make things - we take them apart and clean them up.

KWalls 9th April 2008, 01:41 PM Here are a few of the pieces we produce.
The first is called an Optical Bench (17-4 Stainless Steel 21 operations, mirror mount. Tolerances of .0002 for angularity and .0004 for position.) Size: 1.5" x 3" x 7"
The second is a Bracket Pulley (slat) (7075 Aluminum substitute part to replace a casting that is no longer available. Made from solid. 8 operations to complete.) Size: 12" x 12" x 4"
The third is a Beam for the Aft Parachute Mount (Made from 7075 Aluminum, machined complete in 2 rough and 2 finish operations with .050 +/- .005 floors used to mount parachutes for a resusable rocket program.) Size: 9" x 56" x 3"
Geoff Withnell 9th April 2008, 01:54 PM Since I'm a consultant, we don't make things, we try to straighten out the mess, as shown below. Grin!
Craig H. 9th April 2008, 03:02 PM I guess I could show a pile of white powdered clay, but I don't think that would make much sense to most folks. If I was to show pictures of the things that contain our clay I could show pictures of plastics, paint, and such.
For folks in the U.S., I think it is safe to say that at some point you have used a product containing our clay. Do you drive a car, for instance? Have paint in/on your house?
We are not only under the radar, we are likely in it and on it.

Craig,
No one industry is insignificant. All industries have an interdependent relationship, at least in my view. Some industries sustain others. If we have the wisdom to learn, all industries may teach us their virtues. We can learn ways that all may benefit.
SteelMaiden 9th April 2008, 03:47 PM I am somewhat like Craig. You've likely driven over us, definitely used something that was carried in something made from us, if you live in something more permanent than a tent, somebody used us to build the equipment that gave you a foundation, etc. But, looking at a piece of steel is not really exciting by itself.
Craig and I are the workhorses of the world (along with a lot of other commodity suppliers) We shall leave the fancy horse show stuff to the rest of you. You look so nice all shined up, we are proud of you.:agree1: Together we make all the things that make the world go round!
Doug 9th April 2008, 03:52 PM :bigwave:
Bulk supplier of steel sheet for EVERYTHING!!!
Not much in the way of interesting pictures, unless you you would like to see a 250 ton BOP furnace being charged.

Ah, but Steel, you and I are in the unique position to seperate opur companies from our commodity competitors by helping to make sure our products always work like they should. We have had many customers leave based on price, only to come back later when they figure out that if the product ain't there, they can't use it, and if the product shuts them down for quality issues, that great price suddenly looks very expensive. Cool gig, isn't it?
I'm not much on horse shows anyway. Last time I rode one it threw me off.
GStough 9th April 2008, 04:12 PM I don't have any photos, but some of you have probably worn our products on your hands at one time or another, or perhaps your medical professional has worn them during your visit to their office. ;)
Jim Wynne 9th April 2008, 04:14 PM I don't have any photos, but some of you have probably worn our products on your hands at one time or another, or perhaps your medical professional has worn them during your visit to their office. ;)
You make catcher's mitts? :tg:
Benjamin28 9th April 2008, 04:24 PM Now I'm curious what kind of doctors you're visiting Jim.....
Well the only thing we make is standard test specimens for plating tests. Otherwise we specialize in breaking, snapping, bending, disolving, burning, grinding, cracking, crushing, and oxidizing anything made of metal, very likely we've done work for a few covers' employers. Basically our motto is we'll break it for you faster than any of our competitors. ;)
KWalls 9th April 2008, 04:34 PM Now I'm curious what kind of doctors you're visiting Jim.....
Well... the catcher's mitt comment would lead me to believe OBGYN? :lmao:
Wes Bucey 9th April 2008, 04:40 PM Since I'm a consultant, we don't make things, we try to straighten out the mess, as shown below. Grin! Two of the pictures look EXACTLY like my own office [not the bare desk ones!]:lmao:

That is always the big joke on the rescue squads - when you get a 911 call that someone is having a baby and not at the hospital it is always "Grab your catcher's mitt!" But I have a feeling that we might be talking PPE, aka latex or similar gloves.;)

Steel,
:lmao: I knew Gidget was talking about latex gloves! :D But after Jim's comment... I couldn't help myself!

Bingo, Steel! We also make heavier duty items for you folks in the steel, glass, etc. industries. ;) Heck, we even have something for the food industry folks! :tg:
SteelMaiden 9th April 2008, 05:31 PM lol, i've probably put your gloves to a test in the real world.
Coury Ferguson 9th April 2008, 08:04 PM To see pictures of what we manufacturer, go to the website (Home Page URL) in my profile. There you will find a lot of pictures.
Disclaimer: I am not advertising anything, but we have a lot of different types of products we manufacture.
cthink 9th April 2008, 11:31 PM Here we "do" more than "make" and diversity r us so here goes, we:
find jobs for jobseekers and staff for employers (employment services)
train people to train, care, serve, compute and be good managers (training services)
assist to translate experience to qualifications (skills stores)
provide space for you to meet, engage and work together (conferencing and room hire)
make and serve good food and damn fine coffee and provide meaning employment for people with disabilities in doing so (cafe)
print, copy, reproduce and collate for you (printing business)
support young people with disabilities to transition from school to work (disability services)
coach, support and encourage a special football team (disability services)
mentor, challenge, engage and encourage disengaged young people (youth services)
And let me tell you the role of quality systems support is a challenging one across that lot.
cheers
ps: love the shiny photos too, hope you don't mind a couple of snaps of something we do "make"
Gail Former 10th April 2008, 09:11 AM Well, no pictures of what we do either. We document and maintain service and parts information for heavy duty truck transmissions, and provide them in paper, CD or web outputs.
It's a lot more interesting than it sounds:D

We don't make the world go around, but we do make a lot of wheels go around.... we make transmission components.

:topic:
I was thinking of a nice 2-door mid- to late- '50s Desoto, black. The one with the tail fins. I saw one like that with a built 440 in it at the drag strip a few years ago, and it is my favorite drag car ever. It was a little heavy, but with enough motor....
And no, I didn't want to even think about trying to run against it. :nope:
michellemmm 11th April 2008, 02:08 PM Here are some pictures of me..:tg:

errhine 11th April 2008, 07:12 PM Most people don't use my engines as they are attached to todays most grounded aircraft (MD-80's). At least my motors are not the reason for the groundings :tg:
Cardinal Fan 14th April 2008, 06:24 PM I am the Quality Engineer for a group that designs medical devices. The variety is what keeps it interesting...just wrapped up a project for a point of care terminal (transmits data from various medical devices to a health care provider) and now working on a new insulin injecting device.
Crusader 14th April 2008, 06:30 PM COOL!!! Do you get employee discounts? I have been wanting a Hemi crate motor for years now.

On a side not, whenever I travel I always want to bring sample masks and either ask them where I plug mine in, OR hand them out to other passangers, but I don't think the flight crew would have the same sense of humor...:mg:
