View Full Version : NPI (New Product Introduction) in Electronics Industries
Sushma 23rd April 2008, 11:25 PM Hello Seniors,
I am new to this site I find that this is very intresting place for knowledge gaining and aswell sharing. I am here with my first post...New product introduction in electronics manufaturing industries. I am wondering about listening different concepts for different companies, trying to know the most common...please help
How you justify NPI in your organisation under what kind of roles and responsibilties and what kind of reporting structure in different cases?
How do you differentiate New Product Introduction and New Product Implimentation, who should handle it...
So many questions, hoping many replies too
Regards

Sushma,
Please be patient.;) You posted your question: 23rd April 2008, 10:25 PM.
Fellow Covers living in the USA have not even woken up yet.
I am sure there will be a response.

temujin 24th April 2008, 06:14 AM Hi and welcome
You question is extremely broad.
What kind of products are you introducing? What industry? What are your responsibility?
If you could provide some more detail we could narrow it down, and it would be easier for you to get help.
regards

Paul Simpson 24th April 2008, 06:22 AM Sushma. Thank you for your question - are you interested in how NPI should be addressed in an Environmental Management System (EMS) or an Enterprise Management System .... or any other form of "E"?
Ajit Basrur 24th April 2008, 08:05 AM I think the poster is referring to Electronics Manufacturing Systems (EMS) - lets wait
Refer this link also - NPI (New Product Introduction) Process Qualification System Required (http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?t=23792)
SteelMaiden 24th April 2008, 08:57 AM I changed the title to read electronics industries. I looked at the title this morning and wondered whether we were discussing Emergency Medical Services, or Environmental Management Systems. Acronyms are not a good thing in thread titles.
Sushma 24th April 2008, 09:52 PM Hi Timujin,
My responsibility is new produt introduction ( managing the new project in different phases until it gets approved by customer ). We are producing Electronics, for example one of our product is PCBA using SMT machines.
So, how you all justify NPI Team/Organization in Electronics factory. Thanks in advance, Sushma
Sushma 24th April 2008, 09:58 PM HI Paul Simpson,
Soory for my " short cuts ". Ajit Basrur is right, we call EMS as Electronics Manufacturing Serivces ( where as ODM is Original Design Manufaturers ).
Hope evrybody is clear, so please go back and see my original post :P

This reply is probably too late in arriving  But nevertheless...
I am not part of the NPI team but I do work closely with them. New Product Introduction (NPI) team conducts Engineering Qualification builds (usually to iron out process and design deficiencies, define appropriate process parameters, program coding and tester configurations. Major design changes are made at this stage if necessary). There is no separate New Product Implementation team, but rather a new team is formed which consists representative members of both mass-production engineers and New Product Introduction(NPI) team members. This team carries out Factory Qualification builds. During these builds, the production system will be tested out for process robustness and optimization. The general aim is to measure yield and process stability during mass-production. NPI members will generally be involved in resolving process deficiencies at this stage whilst mass-production engineers coordinate the general logistics of the entire affair. At this stage responsibilities for the product is 'transferred' wholly to the mass-production team.
Well this is how we generally work. Of course I left out a whole chunk of responsibilties assigned to individual teams during Engineering and Factory builds. Its a long list.

Hi Sushma,
If u r industry is an EMS provider then there will be a Manufacturing Engineering department or simply a project management team, who collects and finalizes all the manufacturing data from the OEMs such as the BoM, PCBA drawings, Pick and Place files, inspection and test plans etc. After the parts are procured , there will be typically a protoype assembly to streamline the manufacturing process, here u will verify the manufacturability and concerns if any will be communicated back to the customer, finally usually from my experience after the succesful prototype assembly the product will be handed over to the production engineers.
And again all this depends on how ur management has structured u r organisation and applicable procedures..
Regards,
Harish
