View Full Version : Intelligent Part Numbering Schema for Part/Material Traceability

I searched for exisiting threads, and only found one on use of serial numbers for material traceability.

Can someone update me on the standard arguments regarding intelligent part numbering schema?

I guess the arguments change shape depending on type of business. We are (will be, since we are a startup) a manufacturer of Solar capital equipment. We will sell equipment to the solar cell manufacturers who then sell there solar cells to solar panel (module) makers. Our equipment can range anywhere from 1500 to 4000 unique part, a blend of OEM parts as well as parts fab'd per our prints.
We will be doing great if we ship one system a week... but will be happily in business at a system per month. So this is low volume, ETO type Mfg. System selling price will be between 3-12 million $. We will have spare parts business, Field service, warranties etc... (very similar to Semiconductor Cap. Equip.)

I at least think the numbers should have some indication of document type: OEM part, Manufactured Part, Assy, Schematic, Work procedure, Manual, Inspection procedure, cable dwg....etc....

Thanks for you input, thoughts, advice in advance !!
Steve

Have you ever hear of the Opitz Classification System? It is a numerical way to identify your. However, this is for defining machined parts by attributes. but you may follow by example if you wish.
