View Full Version : Closed or Resolved: Announcement Link Erroring Out
Marc 21st June 2008, 09:45 AM I just posted an 'Announcement'. The last time I did this some people told me the link was giving them an error.
Please let me know if you click on the Announcement Link and you get an error message.
Thanks!
Marc
SteelMaiden 21st June 2008, 09:57 AM I got the "even though you appear to be logged in, you don't have permission" error
Marc 21st June 2008, 10:02 AM Steel - Was that on the Search Results page (like from an actual Search or from the 'Last 24 Hours' link)? If so, do the links to the Announcement in the individual forums work?
So far it appears to be an error that occurs when Super Moderators click a link.
SteelMaiden 21st June 2008, 10:09 AM Yes, I went into it from posts last 24 hours and since last visit. Where are the anouncements housed when you go to the main forums page? (I just looked quickly after I saw your question...yes, I'll probably feel really stupid when you tell me and it is right in front of me...:mg:
Marc 21st June 2008, 10:25 AM That's one thing I don't like - Announcements apparrently don't show up on the Main forum page. They are't (as far as I understood it) supposed to show up in the Search Results pages. They are only *supposed* to show up in each individual forum (or the forums listed when the announceement is made).
I'll experiment a bit. I'm thinking if rather that my specifying ALL Forums, if I specify a subset the link won't show up on the Search Results page.
I rarely put up an Announcement, so it's not a big deal, but I still want to figure out what the software is doing.
CarolX 21st June 2008, 10:38 AM I got the "even though you appear to be logged in, you don't have permission" error
Marc -
I got the same thing from the "since last visit" serarch page.
Coury Ferguson 21st June 2008, 10:44 AM Same here Marc
Ajit Basrur 21st June 2008, 12:15 PM Got the msg -
Forum Permissions Error Message: Although you appear to be 'Logged In' - and thus you have gone through the Registration Process, you do not have permission to access this page, attachment, forum or function. The problem is probably due to one of the following reasons: ............
BradM 21st June 2008, 12:39 PM I clicked on it, and I got the forum permission page. So, essentially I saw the same thing as the other folks.
Marc 21st June 2008, 03:41 PM OK - I appreciate the feedback. It only appears to be happening to users in the Super Moderator user group.
Miner 21st June 2008, 05:01 PM Same here.
howste 21st June 2008, 10:45 PM I clicked the announcement and got the error. Last I checked, I'm not a moderator of any kind.
Funny, I didn't see this thread, but found it when I was going to report the error...
Coury Ferguson 22nd June 2008, 12:22 AM I clicked the announcement and got the error. Last I checked, I'm not a moderator of any kind.

Howste,
I don't believe you need to be a Moderator to see the announcements, but Marc might be able to expand a little if this is correct.
Marc 22nd June 2008, 02:10 AM The key here is someone who is not a super moderator got the error. That makes troubleshooting a bit easier.
My immediate investigation is why it's showing up on the Search Results pages.
It is correct that every user group should be able to see the Announcement and the link should work.
harry 22nd June 2008, 02:40 AM Had you corrected it? Just tried and it works. I am using IE6 on this notebook.
Ajit Basrur 22nd June 2008, 03:00 AM I can not - using IE 7 :(
Marc 22nd June 2008, 03:53 AM Had you corrected it? Just tried and it works. I am using IE6 on this notebook. I haven't done anything yet. I just found out it was happening for other user groups. I was thinking it was a user group issue, but apparently that's not the case. The link in the Search Results page shouldn't show it at all, which is my current focus - Why is it showing there? I don't MIND it showing there, but it's not supposed to as far as I can tell. It should only show in individual forums. I can say when I tried the link after I put up the Announcement it worked for me (Firefox on a Mac).
As far as I can tell from feedback so far is the problem with the link in the Search Results page, not in the link that is in each individual forum. If anyone is experiencing problems with the link to the Announcement that is in a forum listing I'd like to know.
Dr. L. Ramakrishnan 22nd June 2008, 04:33 AM I tried yesterday and today; on both the occasions I got the error message.
Wes Bucey 22nd June 2008, 06:30 AM The link shows up at the top of "last 24 hours" and "since last visit" - these links lead me to error message.
The link shows up at the top of an individual Forum page. The link on a Forum page DOES work: Across the US on Bicycles - Jon Champagne's Trip Blog
This is kinda off topic, but Tracey (Jon Champagne's aunt) and her son had some visitors who hail from Arkansas. Tracey's son, Jess, is about 22 years old. Turns out 3 friends from Arkansas (where Jess grew up) are going across the US on bicycles. I made the comment that they should be writing about it as they go and posting on the internet. Turns out, they are.
It's kinda interesting crossing the US on a bicycle, especially these days. Anyway, their internet site is: Jon Champagne's Trip Blog (http://champagneamerica.blogspot.com/).
What a GREAT teaching moment for a Root Cause investigation!
Perhaps you could provide a "step-by-step" as you go. It might be interesting to see some of the blind alleys along the way.
Marc 22nd June 2008, 01:19 PM Once I get enough data I'll let you know what I find out. The first 'blind alley' was that it was only happening to those in the Super Moderator's user group.
Marc 22nd June 2008, 01:38 PM Not fixed, per se, but the Search Results page will no longer show Global Announcements.
The problem was arising from some different specific user group settings.
Umang Vidyarthi 22nd June 2008, 02:03 PM Not fixed, per se, but the Search Results page will no longer show Global Announcements.

Today I also clicked on the link 'Posts last 24 hours', and then clicked on blog entry: Across the US on Bicycles - Jon Champagne's Trip Blog, only to find error message.
Umang
Marc 22nd June 2008, 02:22 PM It will no longer show up on the Search Results page. Announcements will only show up in individual forum views. Clicking the link there should not error out.
If anyone gets an error clicking on the Announcement link in a forum view, please let me know.
Note that the forum Home Page is not a forum view and Announcements do not show up on the forum Home Page.
