I’m looking for a visual acceptance criteria for porosity in the machined area of ferrous castings. Any standard references would be helpful.

View Full Version : Visual Acceptance Criteria for Porosity in Ferrous Castings RayZ-Insp 26th June 2008, 11:23 AM I’m looking for a visual acceptance criteria for porosity in the machined area of ferrous castings. Any standard references would be helpful. justncredible 26th June 2008, 11:36 AM Unless the machined area is for clean up only, we segergate and mark the area and ship to the customer. They still have to pay for the machining. But now that is from a job shop and not a casting/machining house. It gets charged back to the caster either way. I personally have seen callouts for size allowed for voids but those are all customer and most of the time print specific. Coury Ferguson 25th August 2008, 08:01 AM Does anyone have information regarding porosity? tlonkey 25th August 2008, 09:30 AM Rayz Not sure if this will help you but it might give you a place to start. I used the attached inspection methods when I was the QM at a foundry that poured magnesium and aluminum cast products. We used the inspection instructions and criteria for my inspectors after customer review and approval. We would also use boundary samples showing the examples of the different types of porosity bad and the "ok to use" as well. tlonkey andygr 25th August 2008, 09:31 AM Give a look at ASTM A 834 or A 802. If you have access to IHS you can use the search function to find others. :2cents: |
