View Full Version : Restructuring and Additional Responsibilities - Need New Quality Title
Jo Duhamell 17th July 2008, 09:31 AM My current title is Ast. Mgr. of Quality. Within the past couple of weeks we've had a fair size lay off and departmental shifts, which means the survivors take on additional responsibilities.
I will now incorporate TS, mfg. forms, and NCMR database into my role. We have an associate that also has an Ast. Mrg. Quality title. Needless to say we're alittle messed up.
My question is: can anyone give me suggestions on new titles to reflect my new roles and current role (PPAPs, CARs, TS, mfg. forms, NCMRs, QA customer reports)?

Senior Quality Engineer
AndyN 17th July 2008, 09:34 AM Jo:
Wow, that many hats.......enough for one a day! How about (Assistant) Quality Systems Manager - since most of what you described are 'management systems' related activities.......
:2cents:
Kales Veggie 17th July 2008, 09:41 AM Off topic slightly:
CQO (Chief Quality Officer) (with all your hats, maybe appropriate)
harry 17th July 2008, 09:46 AM Needless to say we're a little messed up
Would a new title help to clear this? Something more important need to be looked into.

I agree with Andy. :agree1: This one might be more appropriate for the additional duties that have been added to your current job.
Jo Duhamell 17th July 2008, 10:04 AM I definitely agree that more than titles need to be re-evaluated, however, I have no control over that (it is Japanese automotive). I just try to make the best of a bad situation.
Coury Ferguson 17th July 2008, 10:09 AM I would suggest the following potential titles:
1. Senior Quality Engineer (As Boscoeee suggested)
2. (Assistant) Quality Systems Manager (As AndyN suggested)
3. Quality Representative
4. Quality Systems Monitor

Point taken. Wishing you all the best under the new arrangement.
SteelMaiden 17th July 2008, 10:43 AM :2cents:is a title change going to make any difference? So, you have more than one assistant title...define the responsibilities as such. One assistant is charged with x, y, and z; the other with a, b, and c. Not everyone has to have a different title. We have several accountant positions, one works on the purchasing/raw material accounting, one works on fixed assets, etc. (just an example.)

Jo,
A job title is just a label that may or may not cover the actual responsibilities of the individual.
I believe that my Fellow Covers came up with interesting sounding titles, but what really counts is what your job includes and the necessary competency associated with it.
I am sure you have given this some thought....:)
I just hope your boss did too....:(
There's only so much an individual can possibly do..
Stijloor.
boy.greenfingers 26th March 2009, 12:36 AM I was task to handle a new organization (Corporate Quality Data Center). I never heard of this before. I was wondering what would be the roles and responsibility of this department ? I was handling the Corporate Audit before the reorganization.
What I am currently doing right now is to collect quality data such as the following:
- reliability & life test
- cpk
- FQC DPPM
- customer complains
- customer audit findings
- internal audit findings
- Incoming material defect rate
- LRR (lot rejection rate)
- ECN trend
- RMA rework rate on FAE sites
- Cost of Quality
- Six Sigma Training status
- Quality Issues and Improvement plans
I feel that those are not enough. Top management is saying that data is power and will motivate actions to implementations. Expectations are higher and in the sense that the whole data once consolidated will speak one common language and will also identify a top 5 major concern.
Can you give any insights or suggestions. Is there any existing department with this kind of responsibilities ?
Appreciate your return replies.
JaneB 26th March 2009, 01:06 AM You could try CDQ Manager (no one will know what it stands for, probably) - Corporate Data Quality Manager

Yes indeedy. I've seen many a person with a title sounding great (but signifying nothing much in reality) and conversely, people with relatively ordinary titles who had enormous responsibility or power in the organisation.
As Shakespeare said through Juliet:
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."

Thank you for your response. CDC Manager is acceptable, however, the task that I do like gathering data, grouping data, simplifying, analyzing and highlighting is a job of an engineer or clerk right. Aside from this data gathering stuffs which I might get stuck into, do you have any idea or thoughts that a CDC should do for job security purpose. I have only one engineer under me and if he is doing all the data gathering stuff, then nothing will be left for me. Is there any way that will stimulate the top management like...... " wow ! that is a good idea".... or something like extra ordinary that will add credibility to the new organization I am handling.
Appreciate any comments. Thank you.
JaneB 26th March 2009, 09:09 PM I've always found the best path to 'job security' (if there were any such thing) is to keep learning, improving and developing skills that are in demand in the marketplace.
boy.greenfingers 26th March 2009, 09:25 PM JaneB,
Thanks for the moral support. This is the reason why I joined the Cove. to learn and improve. I need the expertize of you guys to help me go on. I cannot start from the beginning of a technology if there are others out there who are willing to share their success then I can benchmark and continue with the improvement. Sooner I will be like you guys giving advise to many.
Right now I am faced with a situation that I have not handled before. The CDC is just new to me. I am am expat and language barrier is also a roadblock so communication is crucial. Apparently, I am using one of my resource struggling to overcome the roadblock.
So, I hope everyone can also extend a helping hand about Corporate Data Center is all about. Our brainstorming might create an idea and a spark to hit a goal. Thank you.
