If our customer designates a carrier or they send their trucks to pick up parts from our facility, does our responsibility for shipping damage from the shipping (not the internal packaging) end once the pallets are loaded onto the trucks?

It should be clear who is responsible for delivery of the goods: the customer, the supplier, a third-party, etc...

Typically, when a customer designates a freight supplier, your responsibility and custody of the product ends at your shipping dock. However, and once again, you need to see what the contractual arrangements say about that.

If the contract (usually the PO) states that a shipment is FOB your dock, your responsiblity (for damage in transit) ends when the driver signs the bill of lading and the stuff is loaded on the truck. The customer should file a claim with the carrier for goods damaged in transit.

Actually it does not matter if your customer picks it up from your facility as Clause 7.4.1 relates to Purchasing Process and in this context you are responsible for verifying the product meets the requirements (Clause 7.4.3) even if procurement is from the customers required supplier or as supplied by the customer directly.

7.5.5 Preservation of Product is the clause that requires preservation of the product at delivery to the intended destination, in this case your customer. Even if pick-up by the customer you must still assure that the packaging protects the product during normal transit to the customer.

Determination of contractual requirements related to release of product liability for damage when the customer takes passion at your loading dock should be part of your contract review process before the acceptance of the order.
