View Full Version : Do Gauges used for Maintenance of the Facilities Require Calibration
Manix 11th September 2008, 08:34 AM HI All,
I'M BACK!!! :bigwave: Apologies for the absence. I have been very busy with work and my uni work, I am now officially in charge of our QMS after a long time waiting in the wings!!
Anyway, the reason for my post is that our works manager asked me the above question. He needs to buy a pack tester for testing the electrics of the facility and he asked if this needed to be bought and maintained with the UKAS calibration certificates, we have to have for product conformity gauges.
Reviewing TS16949, as far as I can tell, this only applies to those gauges used in product conformity checking.
Would this be requried for checking the facilities. When I say facilities I mean general electrical testing, not checking of machinery. We only do a very limited amount of light assembly, no manufacturing as such.
Hope you can shed some light!

How important is it that these devices are telling you the truth for the purpose of safety and "suitable equipment?"
Stijloor.

:lol:So were you waiting in the wings, or was your QMS?:tg:
Enough goofing off...
NOTE: I am not versed in the 16949 standard, so my comments are general in nature.
I guess I would ask why you are going to perform these tests on the electrical equipment. Is this for a customer, environmental, safety issue? Given the requirements for the test, it may specify calibration requirements.
Being in service, electrical trade, and managing calibration operations, I have found that when in doubt, calibrate. obviously a program with 3000 instruments needs a little more sound policy than that. But when you're talking about a multimeter, meg meter, o-scope, or something like that, its really not that bad to send it off every 12-18 months to assure its working properly.
If it's important enough to measure, it should be accurate.:)

Definately me, the QMS has existed longer than I have around here!!!!
Thanks to everyone for their input. I have converyed the thoughts here with the works manager. We'll see where we go from here. :thanx:
