View Full Version : Closed or Resolved: Cannot change font for pasted text?

1. Begin to create a new thread/post. My test was in the "ROHS" sub-forum.
2. Paste in some text-content from elsewhere, that is in a different font than the board default.
3. Highlight the wrong-font text and pull down the font selection box.
4. The font selection box will not scroll. Any displayed font can be selected, and the highlighted text will be changed to the selection...but the fonts below the displayed window are inaccessible.

Win XP SP2, IE 7.0.5730.11

Please confirm: You're editing in the WYSIWYG mode, here in the forums, correct?

2. Paste in some text-content from elsewhere, that is in a different font than the board default. Cutting and Pasting from other sites, especially with IE and editing in WYSIWYG mode here in the forums, can be a problem because a lot of formatting codes are carried over which in some cases conflict with vB formatting codes.

Sorry...yes, WYSIWYG.

I can certainly understand code conflicts, but I don't understand why the pulldown box wouldn't scroll once it had opened.

Imaging Rese <-- some text that I just pasted into this message. The font pulldown box opens but won't scroll.

I'm not sure what to tell you yet. I'll check on my PC with IE in a bit, but it will be a test of typed in text. It would be a real task to coordinate on a specific 'patch' of another web site page to copy and paste here. And even if we did, this does not appear to be a common issue. I can't reproduce it on my Mac with Firefox.

1. Does it work if you're not pasting in text (just typing in text)?
2. Have you tried clearing your browser cache, closing your browser and then reopening it and trying it again?
3. Was it working before (like yesterday or the day before)?

I just checked a hunch. If you clip and paste formatted text from another website into a posting box here in the Cove, it often has "hidden" formatting codes embedded. By switching the editing mode (upper right corner of the posting box), you can see the extra code formatting in brackets scattered throughout the pasted text. Once those are deleted, the text can be formatted using the Elsmar tools.

For long passages which may contain multiple format codes, a simple workaround is to paste the text into Notepad, which strips all the formatting codes. Copy the text from Notepad into the Elsmar posting box and you have raw text which can be formatted using the Elsmar formatting tools.

Test of typing in text:

testing --> testing --> testing

Yes, it works to type in text, then highlight it, then open the font selection box, scroll it as needed by holding down the mouse button over the scroll arrow, and select a different font.

Test of pasting text:

I just checked a hunch. --> I just checked a hunch.

Problem still exists...font box doesn't scroll normally.

I just checked a hunch. --> This pasted text doesn't seem to include any embedded codes, at least that show up in non-WYSIWYG mode.

However, I just recognized a new element to the issue: the font box will scroll one line in response to a double click on the scroll arrow. Neither a single click nor holding down the mouse button over the scroll arrow works, but a double click does.

Next I'll restart my machine to see if it's related to this particular IE session.

Same as before...the scroll box will not scroll normally, i.e. by holding down the left mouse button while holding the pointer over the scroll box down arrow. It will, however, scroll one line downward when the scroll box down arrow is double-clicked.

Another test from a different Windows desktop at a different location, running Vista Home Premium and IE 7.0.6001.18000...the only apparent exact commonality is the same user:

pasted content --> They were too close to the door

font change process --> They were too close to the door

Same functionality as reported above...the font selection scroll window scrolls normally when the highlighted text was typed; but, when the highlighted test was pasted and no other action has been taken since the paste, the scroll window will not scroll at all in response to single-click-over-scroll-arrow and single-button-hold-down-over-scroll-arrow mouse inputs, and scrolls only one line at a time in response to double-click-over-scroll-arrow mouse input. At least for me, this UI discrepancy created the user impression that the scroll window would not scroll at all.

End of report. :)

OK - Well, like I say, any time you copy and paste unexpected problems can happen, especially when posting into a WYSIWYG interface, especially as most of this is Ajax and/or java script.

NOTE: If you want to 'Clean Up' text that has been copied from a web site, copy what you want and Paste it into a text editor (must be a text editor, not Word or other formatting software). It should 'paste' into the text editor without all the 'codes'. You can then copy the 'cleaned' text in the text editor window and paste it into the WYSIWYG window without a problem.

In any case, if you really want to see what's happening, toggle out of WYSIWYG.

Is this issue closed to everyone's satisfaction?
