Please provide your input to the following question:

My IMDS submission for a product we make from AISI 1008 steel was returned not acceptable from our customer with the following message: “need: standard material no” . The IMDS report I submitted has next to the field Std.Mat.-No. AISI 1008. Any input as to what needs to be provided. Our product is completely done from AISI 1008 steel, nothing else.

Thanks,

IMDS may be looking for the UNS or Unified Numbering System identification for the steel.

The following document (https://portal.covisint.com/portal/cmdocs/d0ced847b9059524f6dce06553e9ab18/10949001_imds_reporting_instruction.pdf) from Delphi and these (one (https://www.mdsystem.com/html/data/update_uns_norms_2008.pdf) and two (https://www.mdsystem.com/html/data/imds_create_tips_materials.pdf)) from IMDS may be helpful.

Juliov,

You can use UNS G10080 or 1.9325 if you are using alloy steel or DIN if you are using germany standard. Please refer to the composition and standard material number of IMDS committe material.

FYI i am attaching the screen shots of both.9794

Your customer might be looking for the standard material provided by the IMDS committee / Stahl und Eisenliste.

If you created the material yourself, you should replace it with a material created by the IMDS committee (for example: IMDS ID 14225 / 1008 steel) using the "search material" function.

Or possibly use the ASTM code for it.

Can you provide an example of code please. The info available is large and this would help me narrow down the search. Thanks!

What is the difference between a material created in house vs the IMDS committee? and I have not seen this issue in previous submissions we have done. How do I ID the IMDS mtls IDs.
Thank you much!

Hi juliov ,

The IMDS committe material is created assuming general conditions. Let me explain you in brief.

You can find more than one norm for the materials which represents the material conditions i.e. cold rolled, hot rolled, whether it is weldable, heat treated etc...)
Usually the IMDS committe material contains all the norms irrespective of the application for the material. But if we create the material inhouse we only add particular norm which is precise to the material condition during the product manufacturing. This is the major difference, also if there is any additional changes in the range of substances used in the material which would prepared in house for the specific applications. We will not able to find the cross reference material in the IMDS committe.

I hope the table attached will help you to find the IMDS committe material, I also suggest you to recheck the range of portions of each substance with your material specifications.

If you still need any more informations please feel free to contact me.

Regards.

Thanks MK!!
question: The Stahl und Eisen Liste SAE 1008, what relation to the UNS? data in the Excel spreadsheet? There are 2 suppliers then, the IMDS committee and the Stahl und Eisen?

Dear Juliov,

I think you know about different Material numbering system. Let me brief you with few details of numbering system. Material can be numbered using different systems like

Standard Country
1. DIN standard Germany
2. AISI & SAE Standard US
3. JIS and JASO Japan
4. BS British
5. GB China

as per the country standrad organisations. This is why there is more than one material published according to the internationally valid standards.

Coming to your question. Yes, you can find two suppliers to steel 1008. One refer to Germany standard i.e. DIN numbering system and another refers to US standard i.e. ASTM and SAE.

Materia Name Refers to
Carbon Steel (1008) US standard i.e. ASTM, UNS and SAE
SAE 1008 German Standard i.e. DIN standard

If you still need any more information as usual you are always welcome.
