View Full Version : Does plant personnel need to be re-trained to the new ISO 9001:2008 revision??

Do personnel need to be re-trained to the new ISO 9001:2008 standard? My company has been ISO 9k2k for 6 years and all our employees have been trained to the previous ISO 9k2k standard. We have an assessment audit coming up this year and will be audited to the ISO 9001: 2008 revision of the standard and want to be prepared. Comments? Thanks.
jonc5150 30th January 2009, 10:26 AM Julio,
I would at least make sure that they receive at least some documented "overview of iso 9000:2008" training or similar, whether it be handouts, PowerPoint presentation, etc.
Have there been any new or revised procedures written to comply with the 2008 version?
juliov 30th January 2009, 11:03 AM No changes or new procedures, only minor word changes as stated by the new ISO 9001: 2008. The structure of the standard is the same no new reqs have been added. Only some word clarifications in some of the reqs.
AndyN 30th January 2009, 11:13 AM Don't waste your, or their, time!
We've endlessly debated the amendments here and whether even quality professionals need any 'training'. It's not, is the consensus....
I don't know why anyone else would even need to know about ISO. They don't need anything technical about it. You won't get any benefit from the work you'd put in to make slides etc.
jonc5150 30th January 2009, 11:22 AM I would have to agree. If there aren't any procedural changes, I wouldn't see why additional training would be necessary.
Although, a lttle bit of CYA never hurt:rolleyes:

From what would you be CYA-ing'?
ScottK 30th January 2009, 11:34 AM I formally trained my internal auditors line by line on the changes and gave the execs a summary.
Otherwise I just told everyone that the new rev was out if they are affected it will be pointed out during the next round of internal audits.
AndyN 30th January 2009, 11:42 AM Actually, to be accurate, the answer should be a question:
"What does your process for 'competency, awareness and training say?"
Do you people have to be competent in the ISO standard (I hope not), do they need to be aware of the ISO requirements? Have you competency criteria that state knowledge and awareness of ISO 9001 requirements are required and they can't demonstrate that, then they need training!
Often, our own management systems should be used to answer our own questions about these issues, rather than endlessly debate 'opinion' or prepare for (the eventuality that) an auditor will ask that question...........
More to the point, perhaps is did you bring up the revision at Management Review for discussion under 'Changes that affect the QMS'?
jonc5150 30th January 2009, 11:44 AM Andy - I was referring to the whole internal communication deal. Maybe I'm just NADCAP weary (different auditors, different interpretations):frust:

Yeah, I get ya! "NADCAP - MADCAP":notme:
juliov 30th January 2009, 01:40 PM Good point you make Andy, I agree, the new revision of the ISO 9001- 2008 standard should be brought over for discussion at a Management Review this implies communication, awareness, and other points that will show an auditor that our plant's QMS is in tune with "changes that affect the QMS..." Of course there is reference to many docs throughout our plant referencing ISO 9001-2000 we will remove remove and update and inform employees the reason for the changes. Comment?
howste 30th January 2009, 01:44 PM Remove the date and just say ISO 9001. Or just remove the reference to ISO 9001 altogether if you'd like.

No, don't waste your time. :nope: Don't worry about standards.
However, are all your folks competent? Are they able to apply skills and knowledge so that they can be safe, effective and effcient?
Management should worry about that.;)
Stijloor.
juliov 30th January 2009, 02:12 PM Remove the reference to ISO 9001:2008 and instead reference it as what? QMS? or standard? or ISO standard. Comment.
howste 30th January 2009, 02:34 PM Can you give some examples of where you reference ISO 9001?
There's no requirement that you reference the standard at all. I don't think I would refer to ISO 9001 except in the quality manual and maybe the internal audit procedure.
Randy 31st January 2009, 12:29 AM What potential return will you expect to get from the thousands of dollars of man-hours you'll be investing in the training of information about something new that really isn't?
If you want to spend my money you better be prepared to show me what I'll get out of it.
