View Full Version : Powder Paint Supplier Audit Questions Checklist

Hi: I have been asked to audit a powder paint supplier for potential GM product. Having talked to GM, apparently powder paint does not have a set of audit questions like CQI-12 (ecoat process).
If any-one has a generic set of audit questions to share, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jeff

The best place to start is to ask the potential supplier for copies of their process documentation (work instructions, PFMEAs, control plans, etc.). Go over them with the supplier and ask questions if there's something you don't understand. If you'd like to learn more about the process, there are online resources such as this forum dedicated to surface finishing (http://www.finishingtalk.com/community/forum14-Powder-Coating.html).
If you have no experience in the process you'll need to try and learn a little first, and then use the supplier's documentation for guidance.

It may help to develop your questions if you understand a little bit about the process. I found the following link to a web page which explains things in laymans terms.

As with most painting processes, the surface preparation is the most critical part of the process. E.g. if the pretreatment is a phosphate process, how do they ensure that enough phosphate is applied and how big are the phosphate chrystals.

CQI-12 Special Process: Coating System Assessment most definitely includes powder coating, as well as the pretreatment processes before powder, and the curing (bake) processes after.

Well worth the money, the team worked hard on it.
