View Full Version : Validating ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) Flooring

Hi All, Didn't know if there was anyone else working on a Sunday, but thought I'd give it a shot.

I'm new at this Company as Quality Mgr and did an audit of the factory last week to get oriented. I asked about validation of their ESD Flooring. In the past, I've worked at companies that had documented ESD Validation Reports for their ESD Flooring, but this company hasn't address that 'yet'. They check the ESD Straps on their feet every day, but haven't established pass/fail criteria or tested the validation to show that their flooring is adequately conductive to ground.

Does anyone have some simple guidance on this for to meet GMPs? FYI, we have an ESD area defined, but their is an argument that ESD controls aren't really needed for what our people are doing. I think, however, that we want to continue to have a designated ESD area.

Thanks.

I don't have any procedures here, but this source (http://www.ce-mag.com/archive/03/07/esdhelpdesk.html) lists ANSI specs.

This site (http://www.staticsmart.com/esd-static-control-products/esd_flooring_test_meters.php) lists some equipment for the job. I am not affiliated with Static Smart.

Testing and equipment needs may vary for the type of floor you have. I suggest you contact its manufacturer.

If you are interested, we do have a previous discussion on this subject here: Is ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) a Special Process under ISO 9001:2000? (http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?t=6801&highlight=validate+esd)

I supposed you need to look at historical records and see if you can come out with the quantum of damages/NCP attributed to ESD and value involved to justify if further improvements are needed.
