View Full Version : Have ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 requirements reached Russia?

I have come into a job recently where I am now in charge of the Company's ISO 9001 and 14001 requirements, albeit with no previous experience (strong guidance oversees my work of course).

My previous background was in a separate industry although focused on Eastern Europe. Hence my interest and question - Does anyone know if Russia has generally adopted ISOs, and in particular 9001 or 14001? I would think Quality would be coming to the forefront now they have all the money and their domestic markets are taking off (took off about 4 years ago) - although am less conifdent that ISO 14001 would get much of a look in.

If anyone has any thoughts, i'm interested to hear them.

Good question, Peter. I don't know, but I bet some of our auditors would. For a start, I might go to some of the main Certification Bodies and see if they have any Russian companies listed.

I would think that American/ EU organizations with entities in Russia would embrace the standards.

Too, you might consider moving this to the ISO standards forum. It might get a little more traffic.

You may want to look at this ISO link (http://www.iso.org/iso/pressrelease.htm?refid=Ref1089). This is another (http://www.ecology.or.jp/isoworld/english/analy14k.htm) found through googling.

Be aware that both BSI and Lrqa have offices there.

So it seems it is still a fledgling ideal out there. If anyone does think this thread should be moved please feel free as I wasnt sure where best to put the question.

I suppose that is a potential market to jump on once i'm fully up and running with the ISOs :)

ISO 9001 has definitely been adopted in some parts of Russia - I presented a lead auditor course in Tomsk, Siberia about 3 years ago. There is a very strong certification body presence and lots of certificates (sorry I don't have any numbers) are issued. ISO 14001 is also being adopted there too.

My impression when working with them was that they are very committed to these standards and some of the company sizes are huge - 4000 employees does not seem out of the ordinary! (just think of the 'man-days' needed to do that audit!!).

The parent company for which I work has a factory also in Russia. The factory from Russia has ISO 9001 certificates and is on the way with ISO 14001 implementation.

I don't know if this helps to answer the question, but when I first ordered the ISO 9000 Compendium, a huge book arrived with the standards and guidelines in 3 languages...English, French and Russian.

Hi RC

That certainly would be an indication of Eastern European acknowledgement of the Standards. When did you first order it? I'm sure it has been around for a while if they are printing in Russian, but a few websites i have been forwarded above state a relatively low figure for certificates issued.

Thanks all for your help and info.

This was for the first compendium that I ordered, so it was for either the first or second version of ISO 9001. My only thought in regards to the Russian inclusion is where Russia was the Technical Committee. I honestly don't know where they sat, but if they were the secretary or responsible for the compendium development, the Russian version might have been a "by default" entry.

That being said, I think that if Russia wishes to do business on a global level, their numbers in this area will start to rise. We have seen a larger number of new Cove members coming from India and China - half of the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China. The BRIC is expected to become a major player on the global market scene in the very near economic future.

Bump - Anyone here who can shed light on this? Some statistics are available at the 2006 ISO Survey (http://www.iso.org/iso/survey2006.pdf) document. Check pages 11 and 15 for number of certificates in the Russian Federation.

It looks like Sidney beat me to the ISO survey. In December 2006 there were 6,398 ISO 9001 certificates, and 223 ISO 14001 certificates in the Russian Federation.

Sorry for that I can't be helpful on the ISO matter, but I do know if you want to export any goods to Russia, you have to get a GOST certificate which probably costs you UR 3000.

I have moved these posts to this forum, since it is more related to ISO9001 and ISO14001 than "Immigration and Expatriate Topics."

What is the question? If answer briefly - YES, of course! Most of world known certification bodies are working at present time in Russia: Bureau Veritas Certification, SGS, Moody International, DNV, BSI etc. The number of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 certified companies is increased every year in Russia. Russian experts are members of the most of ISO technical committees, including ISO TC 176. Rostehreg (earlier - GOSSTANDARD) is Russian national standard body.
