View Full Version : Best Way around or through Atlanta
DsqrdDGD909 3rd April 2009, 09:44 AM I will be driving to Florida from Detroit next week. What is everyone's favorite way through or around ATL? I would be going through on Good Friday morning, maybe slightly before the height of rush hour.
I hear there's a new parkway around the west side? Or is that just a rumor?
Thanks.

Just a thought, but if you're passing through Chattanooga, TN, there are some worthwhile things to stop and see there. They call it the Scenic City for a reason - great views all around...
Sounds like a good road trip - have fun and travel safely! :agree1:

If it is early enough, take a deep breath and go straight through. After 5:30 AM or so, I285 is likely the best bet. Be sure to listen to the radio and make the decision when you get close. There is also a phone number you can call (sorry, don't know it, but it is posted on the road) to get real time traffic info.
I don't know if they have Freaknik still, or if it would be that weekend, but if they do, and it is, may I suggest Hilton Head SC instead?
Usually the traffic in ATL, while heavy, moves at a good pace. But, if there is a wreck (or, God forbid, a snowflake  ) all bets are off.
Randy 3rd April 2009, 10:19 AM You just absolutely have to experience the Atlanta 400 either in the morning or evening....a thrill of a lifetime:lol:

I agree. It is a great Toll Road and is certainly not busy between the hours of 06:30 AM and after 16:00 :biglaugh:

I experienced it on a Friday about 6:00PM trying to get back to the airport. Never saw so much traffic, all lanes full both directions. It did move along fairly well though. Made to the rental car return in good time.
I went through there on a Sunday afternoon once and there was hardly any traffic.
ddunn 3rd April 2009, 12:56 PM What part of Florida are you going to? There may be better ways than I75.

Yes that is the 400. I would always take the Train, if I was going to the Airport, so much nicer than driving the 400, but that was because I lived there and was not just visiting.

Naples, FL south of Ft. Myers

Map (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?city=atlanta&state=GA). Having traveled that route since before interstate highways, I've done that trip probably a hundred times.
These days - By-pass unless it's late at night or very, very early in the morning.
The time and traffic determines whether I go through Atlanta or do the by-pass. And I have a CB in my car so I typically know what the traffic situation is before I have to make the decision.
