View Full Version : Concentration Diagram of Product - Plotted defects over a picture of one of our parts

Hello All,

I'm trying to create a concentration diagram of plotted defects over a picture of one of our parts. Our parts are layed out in zones so I would know some locations of the defects.

It was suggested I could create an X,Y chart in Excel, and then use the diagram as the background of the chart which might take a little work to get the alignment and sizing, but should work.

I have a lot of defect data with origin locations and would like to place a dot or other character representing each defect and where it happens on the product for cluster groupings. Does anyone have a copy/example of a concentration diagram in excel? I'm collecting defect data and would like to link it to a concentration diagram. I would like to think there should be a way to link the data points to cells hidden behind an image of the product within excel.

Thanks.

Is this what you are looking for?

I just created a graph from x/y data. You can create the graph on a separate tab, or drag it over the data. The background is Format Plot Area, Fill Effects, Picture, Select Picture.

You might want to try the "spider" charts, too. I used Miner's data, generated spider charts, then turned their backgrounds "no fill". You can even have more of the background show up through the data by changing the fill transparency.

Thanks, all I'll have to play with them a bit to merge my data to find a good fit.

Thanks, after briefly looking at the data, i think I know what to do however, I have a question on the data x,y sets. If I make any number entry in any other cell on the page (not within the already defined A,B) columns, the data points change within the images?

No, the points should not change. If you right click on the chart and select Source Data, you can modify the range that the chart uses to plot points.

No, the points should not change. If you right click on the chart and select Source Data, you can modify the range that the chart uses to plot points.

Open the file you sent and enter any letter or number in any cell range for example try cell L31 and enter any letter or value and watch the data points change within the chart.

I apologize for the confusion. I used a random number generator to create the data. Entering data in these fields caused new random numbers. If you entered actual data, this would not happen.
