View Full Version : How much do you fly - How many miles do you fly a year?
Randy 24th April 2009, 06:41 PM I was just notified by my preferred airline that I have been averaging about 13,600 airmiles per month for the last 74 months...That's 1,006,400 air miles all within the lower 48 states and Canada...I know there are lots of folks with more miles, but I haven't been going to China, Australia or Europe, these are flights to Chicago, Newark, Nashville, Dallas, Houston and other "close" places...That's a whole lot of times up and down and up and down and a bunch of 300, 500 and 1,000 mile flights.....
I'm tired:ko:

Randy,
How do you maintain your sanity? Even though you have some privileges we "coachers" don't enjoy, it must have an impact on you....;)
I regularly fly international, rarely within the US, and I hate it with a passion.
Stijloor.
Randy 25th April 2009, 12:29 AM I think I was insane when I started and my insanity became normal for me, I don't know
I hadn't been keeping track other than making sure I got my segments each year so I could keep in the fat seats up front. I have used 1 airline almost exclusively since 2002 and the miles just built.
Here's the real deal...from June 2002 until now has been about 82 months. I quit flying for 8 months in 2004 when I did that corporate stint, that leaves 74 months. In actuality I only fly about 30-35 weeks a year...lets say 36 (9 months) so thats 3 months per year I don't fly. 3 months X 7 years (2002-2009) = 21 months subtracted from 74 months = 53 months bringing my flying to roughly 19000 miles per month on average. (Some of the weeks I'm not flying I may be driving to local client sites to audit...300 mile range)
No matter how you look at it, that's a bunch of butt in the seat time.
That's why you get paid the Big Bucks!
When does that start happening?
Wes Bucey 25th April 2009, 02:05 AM I know for certain that even in my peak traveling years, my gross mileage in any month never exceeded your average.
Heck - there are probably flight crew members who don't fly as many miles as you!

Nowadays, I am living in Pakistan. Last week (for almost a week) flight crew specially pilots maintained go slow....one of the reasons they said..............we don't want to fly more than 20 days a month.
Big Jim 25th April 2009, 04:54 AM I don't know how many miles I fly. I don't keep track. Probably not as many as Randy though. Sometimes I fly several times a week, and sometimes I'll go two or three weeks without flying. On average, I would guess one round trip a week. Some flights are short (Los Angeles to Phoenix or Los Angeles to San Jose) and some flights are longer (Los Angeles to North Carolina, Los Angeles to Boston, Los Angeles to Minneapolis). I just returned from Seattle. Last week I was in Portland (Oregon).
You may think I'm crazy, but I still enjoy travel.
tlonkey 25th April 2009, 11:33 AM Not even close to any of you guys...usually 4,000 to 6,000 miles a year. Company headquarters in northern michigan and 2nd plant in texas. I use to fly about 15,000 to 20,000 a few yrs ago when I worked for an OEM in the auto sector. We did a lot of work with Toyota and the big (not so much any more) 3 companies. I have had a couple of rough flights but nothing to complain about. Biggest change for me was 9/11 and all the new rules and regulations. Flying is still ok for me except for the airport waits.

gotta love the big seats upfront, when you can get them...
PS: you have me beat. I maintain Platinum year over year, but I also do a lot of driving trips.

are you really suggesting that Randy HAS maintained sanity...?

I requalified Platinum in June or July I think:ko:

It doesn't sound like you fly more often than I do, but you must be doing consistently longer flights. This year I've logged just 80237 miles (not counting flights on other airlines) and my total mileage on my favorite airline is 981881. It looks like I may make a million miles by the end of the year. :mg:
AndyN 18th September 2009, 08:43 AM Back in the 90's I made United 1K status. Mostly on flights to/from my home in Colorado Springs through Chicago. It's a sad time when the crew know you by name....
With this job, my mileage is increasing but it seems like the airlines have become stingy with giving out miles....maybe there are so many people - like Randy - who can ride up front and too few planes with first class any more. I mostly fly on cigar tubes with one class - "uncomfortable".........
A better perk is to be a hotel frequent guest. I have been a Hilton Honors Diamond member for many years. Now that's a perk.......

Good question, and seeing that I'm starting to get involved in GHG Verification and will be conducting training, here you go.
Some recent trips: (All are round trips starting in Fort Smith, AR and are reported in lbs of CO2)
Cedar Rapids 2074
Chicago 1287
Washington Dulles 1608
Baltimore 1608
Cool huh?

You betcha!:agree1:
Executive Elite with National Car Rental doesn't hurt either because you can get a 'Vette in Phoenix as a free upgrade;)

Would the planes have flown if you were not on them?
