View Full Version : Geometric Product Specification (GPS)

My company is receiving customer drawings from Europe which are toleranced in accordance with Geometric Product Specification (GPS). The tolerances on the print resemble regular GD&T, but GPS involves extensions. Literature refers to ISO, but I do not see an ISO standard for GPS.

For those interested there is a descriptive .pdf attached.

Is your company seeing or generating GPS drawings?
Please comment on your understanding and experiences of GPS.

Thanks for your help. Best-- Norris

Norris,

This project is now in the hands of ISO/TC 213 (http://isotc213.ds.dk/).

Click on the link and look for the link to the PowerPoint presentation about Geometric Product Specification (GPS).

Have fun!

Stijloor.

Interesting, Stijloor. We checked with our US moldmaker and our US metrology house, and so far, no one has heard of GPS. The impetus seems to come from Scandinavia, in that a number of the TC participants appear to be Danish.

The website for ISO/TC-213 has a list of presentations on it dating from 2001 to 2003. It also has a powerpoint (sales) presentation dated 2006. There does seem to be a TC meeting scheduled for September of this year, though, so the effort must not be entirely moribund. Still doesn't look like a hotbed of activity, however.

I hope to hear from some folks who are actually using the idea and can vouch for the advertised production efficiencies and savings.

Norris,

The secretariat of ISO/TC 213 is now run by the Danish. Although the initiative is a global one. Look at the organizations involved.

Currently not a whole lot of activity? I noticed that too. Considering the economic turmoil the world is in, I think there's not a whole lot of appetite to develop and release another GD&T-related standard. (The USA and the ISO community have yet to agree on a common GD&T standard.) :notme: GPS? A great initiative indeed, time will tell where this one will go. We'll keep an eye on it.
