View Full Version : Dealing with pesky telemarketers

I really like caller id:

So.... the phone rings. It is from an 800 service. Got to be a telemarketer. They call several times a day, never leaving a message. So, I think I found a way to combat that:

1) answer the phone

2) as they begin to speak start reading this script:
"There is absolutely no risk to you.
That’s right… I said absolutely no risk. All the risk is taken by us. All you have to do is to dial
[Insert their own phone number here]
to place your order. You have my personal guarantee of your personal satisfaction. You cannot be dissatisfied. We assure you of that. So, right now, dial
[Insert their own phone number here]
to place your order. This could be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Don’t let it pass. If you hesitate, you will regret missing out on the greatest value found anywhere, at anytime. And, you can try it risk-free.
There is absolutely no risk to you… [Starting over]
That’s right…"

3) keep repeating the script until they hang up.

I will let you know how well it works.

I had a telemarketer call and ask me about windows and siding - I told them I was planning on tearing my house down within the year. That seemed to end that conversation.

I had a telemarketer call and ask me about windows and siding - I told them I was planning on tearing my house down within the year. That seemed to end that conversation.

Someone called me recently to talk about refinancing my home loan and saving my home from foreclosure.

I very eagerly accepted the call! How exciting is that?! I mean, they're going to save my home from foreclosure, I thought!

So I spent some quality time on the phone with a very nice representative who "pre-screened" me. He was VEEEERRRRY excited, as well.

Then he forwarded me to the person who'd be responsible for saving my home from the clutches of the bank.

He went on to ask several questions, then I asked, "Do I actually need to own a home in order to do this?"

There was a brief silence on the line...

"Sir, do you actually OWN a home in foreclosure?"

I said, "Hell, I don't own a home AT ALL, let alone in foreclosure! That would be awful wouldn't it?!

He said nothing. :-(

I said... "Did I say something wrong? Hello?" Then I was transferred to an automated system that apparently removed me from their call list.

I had a similar experience with someone selling some kind of internet business package that would surely earn me $20,000 per month! I went through the entire sales process, giving the rep all sorts of incorrect information, until it was time to pull out the credit card.... I gave her about 5 or 6 digits from a "credit card" then "dropped the call".

Alternately, I've told them to hold while I get my CC, then just never come back to the phone, just to see how long they'd wait. LOL

Of course, there is my favorite... phone sex! I can't get too detailed on that here, but suffice it to say, you'll leave them speechless!
