Al Dyer 13th September 2001, 08:03 PM I finally got around to checking out all the features and love it! I'm sure there are features that aren't even turned on yet that keep the forum healthy, useful, and fun!
How about the emoticons!
Anybody else wan't them?:D
Jim Biz 13th September 2001, 10:01 PM Al which emoticons are you missing? My screen seems to have lots of them:rolleyes:
Al Dyer 13th September 2001, 10:05 PM Jim,
I think I used the wrong word, are they called ?avitons? The ones we can choose to show up under our names and posts.
Help!!!
Marc 14th September 2001, 01:13 AM I addressed avitars in a recent thread. As I said, I understand the concept but for now they're turned off. It involves getting pictures uploaded and 'pathed'. I think people can even upload their own picture (which is then reduced in size). It's not on my 'immediate' list. All they are is little pictures that you choose which show under your name. Nothing to get excited about.
Marc 14th September 2001, 01:17 PM Go to:
http://www.vBulletin.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=19
Click on any thread and look by the name of the poster. Those pictures are Avatars.
Jim Biz 14th September 2001, 07:37 PM Marc: Checked out the link - Glad it's not on your immediate list
:D
Thinking .... a pic of a bald - old guy on a message board would sacre away most posters
BUT will haave digital pics avaliable of a couple real good lookng Pinto/Paint colts pretty soon
Warmest Regards!!
Jim
Marc 15th September 2001, 03:22 AM Right now I'm sorta monitoring. This is all pretty scarry - I still feel a bit overwhelmed with this new software - it is so far beyond UltimateBB. If everything goes well for a month or so I'll probably get the Avatars together and turned on. If I can say anything about UltimateBB (it was a pretty nice system all in all) I can say it was stable and didn't require much maintenance. Never had a crash or other 'disaster'.
By then you should have a good picture for us! :D

Jim, that description will fit a few of us. As for the animals in lieu of people, now that's scary.
Marc 15th September 2001, 10:30 AM Just to help 'troubleshoot'... Hey energy - no big deal but lately when you post you're 'attaching your signature' by checking the "...Show Signature: include your profile signature..." check box in the Options: block AND you're also typing your name on posts as well. Doesn't matter to me but it does look strange. :p

energy 15th September 2001, 05:24 PM Hey, Me strange? You betcha. Just a habit from the old system. Gotta member to not do dat!
Tanks. This better?
Marc 16th September 2001, 02:06 PM OK, Al. This one's for YOU! The Avatars function is enabled. Go to the User CP (User Control Panel. Click on the User Options link. The last option on the page (at the very bottom of the page) is Change Avatar. Click it and you will see your options. There are a bunch - you might want to browse the pages. Or - you can upload your picture if you think you can figure out how.
energy 16th September 2001, 03:43 PM Testing, testing, 1,2,3
Jim Biz 17th September 2001, 09:57 AM Ok Al - Look what happens when a guy takes a quiet weekend off!!
Function seems to work well though.
Figured I'd start with one that has lots of hair & a lot younger too.
(wishful thinking perhaps??:)

Jim
Howard Atkins 17th September 2001, 10:01 AM Here I am
Marc 17th September 2001, 12:25 PM Good job Howard! I love it! :D
I think I have it set at something like 60 x 60 pixels for uploads - the software comes 'set' at 50 x 50 pixels. I may change it to 70 x 70 but I want to see how all the screens look. I figure a lot of people won't know how to take a picture and 'scale' it to 60 x 60 pixels so I don't expect a lot of people's real faces. But - it is kinda a neat, personalizing feature of the software.
Good to see your face! Yeah - I like the 'avitar' feature.

Jim I wanted to wait to say this but --- I guess now's the time. What the heck. The 'avitar' you choose is always your perceived personality. By choosing Calvin (I have several 'collections' books here which, of all things, my daughter gave me some years ago when she was 7 years old..) I now know your TRUE personality!
Now - I'll needle Al. Al chose the 'Harley Davidson Rider' avitar. Comments, Al?
energy's worm I can understand - he's 'Gone Fishin'' - which matches his custom 'user label'.
Psychology 101 anyone?
Al Dyer 17th September 2001, 01:13 PM Marc,
The beard and blasses are the same as mine and I sometimes have the attitude, but I don't have the hog!
Marc 17th September 2001, 01:40 PM I bet you WISH you had a 'hog'! :p Just kidding. I don't know if you knew it was a biker or not. I knew from the file name but had it not been for that - they're so small - I'm not sure I would have made the connection. FYI there were over 1000 of those 'avitar' pictures in the set I downloaded. If you saw the others - some were REALLY strange, but some were OK - you'd have freaked. I put a lot up as it is. Of course, the ones I chose reflect personalities that (in my feeble mind) were more along the line of what people who visit here might use. Some were - well, as I said, really off the wall.
If you want to look through them all, they're at http://Elsmar.com/temp/
energy 17th September 2001, 01:42 PM Thank you anyway!
Laura M 17th September 2001, 02:14 PM Decisions, decisions
Somedays it's the logical Peppermint Patty or Lisa Simpson. But I almost clicked on the green faced witch too.
I'm sure to upload the real me in a few days.
Jim Biz 17th September 2001, 02:29 PM Well - Guess I picked out what I was in the mood for at the time (grin)
(Isn't Calvin the cranky little kid that's constantly complaining & always thinks folks are picking on him ??? ;) :p Come to think of it - It has been one of those days!! - HA
It was either that or the very bald engineer from Dilbert - didn't happen to see Dog-bert in the collection guess I'll look again later ....
Warmest Regards
Jim
Marc 17th September 2001, 03:30 PM All those Dilberts are there.
Yup - Calvin and Hobbs. I'm an old time fan. When ever I think of Calvin I think of him and Hobbs flying through the air after going over the 'jump' (read cliff) on the sled or the wagon.
When I was a kid we had what we called 'suicide hill' which ran down towards the river through the woods. I'd be at a loss after all these years to proclaim the incline of that hill in degrees of angle, but it was pretty darn steep and at the bottom, if you couldn't stop - you literally ran over the edge into the creek (with water {ice in winter} and rocks) which was down about 6 to 8 feet. There were a few broken arms now and again after a run down ol' suicide!
The Calvin and Hobbs strip was pretty weird sometimes, but often so true to life, as comic strip strips so often are. I can't remember when they guy quit writing the C and H strip. I don't read comics like I used to, but there are a lot of good ones out there still. In my 'early' life I often bought newspapers pretty much by comics content.

Howard Atkins 18th September 2001, 12:48 AM Just to connect the threads. A quote from the announcement on the PPAP forum that I placed, the aviatars and every thing else.
I would like to express on my behalf and all the People of Israel to the American people our sympathy and horror at what has happened.
This situation, but never on the same scale, is one that many other countries have "learned" to live with. I trust that this will give the world the oppurtunity to remove from the root these "gangs of thugs".
To further reinforce Marc's comments, I have been active on the Web for a number of years and never hidden that I am from Israel, I have never had any responses that refer to Israel in any form of politically motivated way. Corespondence around these forums (except for SPAM's) have always been professional and to the point.
Please do not allow the thugs of the world to cause us to fear to continue our business.
With the hope that we can all live with out fear.
Howard Atkins

Marc 18th September 2001, 02:18 PM > Corespondence around these forums (except for SPAM's) have
> always been professional and to the point.
Well, I have to admit that other than this statement, I appreciate your candidness. I say this because I confess sometimes a 'thread' becomes contentious (for lack of a better word) and as often as not it's me being contentious.... I CONFESS! Maybe I should make my 'avitar' the 'Calvin' (of Calvin and Hobbs) avitar...
Howard, thanks for the post. You've been a regular here for years and know (not counting the November-December 2000 elections here in the US where I and a few others got a bit carried away) that this site and the Forums are what they have always been. E Wall 12th October 2001, 02:36 PM I don't think the animation will work...but I like this one!
Marc 12th October 2001, 04:15 PM I'm surprised. It doesn't work for me. All the other animations work. Why did you suspect it wouldn't?
Is this from your hard drive or is it one of the ones you chose here?
Al Dyer 12th October 2001, 04:22 PM Bill,
I have only one picture of myself on the computer and it would not be right to post it here. I'll see what I can do!!!!!
energy 12th October 2001, 04:41 PM Marc,
The avitar that E.Wall used is animation of that cute little face bringing it hands up to it's ears, like horns, and sticking out it's tongue-making raspberry noises and winking. It is not from the choices here. Kinda like this one:lick: :smokin:
Al D.
Send me your best photo. After posting it on America's Least Wanted, I'll send you the avitar for posting. No b****!:smokin:
Marc 12th October 2001, 05:26 PM I hadn't really thought about it. Are there any animated avatars? I don't even know if avatars will/do animate. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't - they're just gif files - but I haven't tried it or really noticed. Guess I'll have to open my eyes and check it out.
E Wall 15th October 2001, 08:12 AM Energy is right on target and I'll try to attach the file to this message for anyone that wants it (given my recent efforts, I'm not expecting too much I'll e-mail it to Marc if it doesn't go through).
I had to change the size to fit the pixel limitation and haven't been able to get the copy on my hd to animate either.
PS to Marc: the worm aviatar that energy used in the beginning is animated (the only one I've seen).
Marc 15th October 2001, 11:28 AM Yeah - I thought there were a couple of other animated ones, as well, but only remember the worm working. I'll look at the file closer later. It appears fine, though. I'm wondering if it has to do with a size restriction. In animations you have different 'cells'. If you re-size th first one I'm not sure if the rest of the cells are resized as well or not.
Not on my immediate to-do list, but I'll be looking into it. I did notice that if I click on the file you uploaded it shows up in my browser - big as life and very animated. I downloaded and checked the file out briefly and it's only a 2 cell amimation. As I remember the worm is 8 or so cells.
Marc 26th November 2001, 07:46 AM I've added a few Icons to both the Message Icons and the Smilies.
Since we get to weird here from time to time, to the Smilies I added:
:ca: = Covering your ass
:evidence: = Evidence
:agree: = I agree
:truce: = Truce! (energy and I will get to use this more than most of you folks...)
You may notice I put a couple extra icons in the Message Icons.
The water drop (or you might call it a tear) = My heart bleeds for you, or I'm so sorry or whatever.
The 'cyclone' = Spin
We all know what a screw is.
And the last is the tall person helping the small person = I take this to mean something along the lines of "...Here - Let me take you by the hand and explain this in a simple way..." or something similar.
Marc 15th March 2002, 02:05 PM Avatar uploading from your hard drive is temporarily disabled. The 'upgrade' from 2.2.2 through to 2.2.4 has broken it. It's a known bug which the developers are working on. See http://www.vBulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41956 for details...:thedeal:
Marc 15th March 2002, 02:47 PM OK - I noticed if I checked the button (Use Custom Avatar) and then browsed to the file on my hard disk, the Use Custom Avatar check would become UNchecked - which one wouldn't expect.
So when I re-checked it after browsing to the file and submitted it did work. I just didn't think about the check unchecking when browsing to the file I wanted to upload.
Avatar uploading is back on and working - just watch that you check the Use Custom Avatar just before you submit if you're uploading an Avatar from your hard drive.
energy 15th March 2002, 04:42 PM When I look at your latest avitar of Mr. Marx, I'm reminded of his show where if you said the secret word a duck would come down and give you a $100. He was probably the quickest man I ever saw with comeback lines. His classic, to me, was when he asked a woman how many children she had. She replied 11 (I think). He said "Wow". She said "I just love kids". He replied "I like my cigar too, but I take it out once in a while". That was pretty racy for the 50's. The man was genius. I don't see the connection!:p :ko: :smokin:
Marc 15th March 2002, 04:49 PM > I don't see the connection!
I understand, but don't be down on yourself.... Only us geniuses understand the connection. It's up there with Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle... Now - Get back to work! :thedeal:

I noticed that more and more members are using their pics for avitars. While we may not all be as handsome as Kevin  , it's nice to see the real person. On my part, maybe 'sarcasm' would have been more appropriate than the word 'critical'....
Admittedly, 100 x 100 isn't much larger than 70 x 70 (which I raised from the standard 60 x 60 a while back). I can raise it, but does anyone really want a larger Profile picture? heck - practically no one uses them anyway.

No sarcasm even intended. We have a saying in this business..."Never pre-qualify a sale." What that means is that when you drive up to a potential Customer's home, never assume that because of the neighborhood, your experience or any prejudices you may have, that the sale is lost. Very often, the sale was completed much quicker than expected. You know, the "Never Judge a Book by the Cover" adage. That rule could be applied to reading a post. Not, who it's from, but rather, its content. I agree that there are a few members posts that force me to think about this rule! And, sometimes I mistake the content for intent. But, I'm getting better at it. ;) :agree:

Marc 28th September 2003, 11:11 PM Right now I'm sorta monitoring. This is all pretty scarry - I still feel a bit overwhelmed with this new software - it is so far beyond UltimateBB. And here we are - 2 years later... And all SORTS of toys!
Marc 8th February 2004, 07:57 AM Al which emoticons are you missing? My screen seems to have lots of them:rolleyes:
In honour of you and energy, I've just added a few more 'smilies'. :magic: :energy:
energy 9th February 2004, 09:13 AM I love the forum rant dude. I will be using him later on in the Coffee Break Threads. Unfinished business to tend to. ;) The "Paint me a picture" and "Try Reading" emoticons will prove interesting depending who sends what to who.. :notangel: :bighug:
Al Dyer 22nd February 2004, 08:47 PM Now for a reply in 2004, More robust, informational, and astute on all fronts. I feel more free to post and expound my views as any problems between Marc and myself are forgotten. I've had some messages from old friends that are very powerful and show the continuing committment to the Cove.
Hopefully back in the fold for good!!!:biglaugh:
Al...
I finally got around to checking out all the features and love it! I'm sure there are features that aren't even turned on yet that keep the forum healthy, useful, and fun!

Anybody else wan't them?:D
Laura M 22nd February 2004, 11:38 PM I hope so - you're comments are appreciated - the Cove lives!!!

Did I mention about how when we 1st met in Troy, I immediately thought of a dog whose fanny had been shaved and was being forced to walk backwards? :lmao:

Jstain1 19th May 2004, 12:50 PM I'm told on another forum "It creeps me out". :tg:
Marc 19th May 2004, 02:47 PM I'm not sure it's the best avatar to use in a forum like this. It may be more appropriate to a gaming forum or such. I would suggest you use something more 'mainstream', but it's up to you.
