View Full Version : Calibration Procedures for Inspection Equipment?

I have been given the task of creating a file containing Calibration Procedures for all our Inspection Equipment (Internal, External Micrometers, Vernier Calipers, D.T.I's, Sine Bars etc etc).

Now, having no experience in calibration or inspection i am stranded. Iv searched the net but not had much luck.

Can anyone suggest how and where I can get information regards calibrating our equipment?

In desperate need of help..

Thanks in advance!

Are you the one who will do the calibration for all those equipments you mentioned? i mean doing the actual calibration? or you will just need to have a filing or a masterlist of all equipment for calibration?

This is my inspection procedure. Obviously it relates to the kit (and QMS) we use, but hopefully if you want an actual procedure this might help.

From our 'post attachments list'. (http://elsmar.com/Forums/fileslist.php?mode=allfiles&sortby=filename&pageamt=2&criteria=calibration)

cutievampire, our inspector left with not much notice so our production engineer is taking over. i just need to create procedures for him to follow if he has to carry out and calibration.

steveK, i may not have been very clear with my requirements. I need calibration procedures for each measuring equipment we have.

Don't waste your time! If you are in a corner, just writing procedures won't help. Someone needs to be competent to do this calibration job. For the equipment you've described, find a local outside cal. lab to do it, until you get a replacement person who comes to you 'competent'.

I agree. Just to get started understanding the concepts the engineer might want to review the AIAG MSA (https://www.aiag.org/source/Orders/index.cfm?section=orders&ETask=1&Task=1&SEARCH_TYPE=FIND&FindIn=0&FindSpec=msa)book. That should be compelling enough to take AndyN's advice. It only covers the concepts - such as bias, linearity, etc. that you should realize you are testing as the "calibration" function. It is not (only) about 'adjusting to gage to get it to read right' as some think.

Since you are in the UK, for your calibration, find a UKAS accredited calibration lab with those type measurement in their scope and send the equipment to them (link below). The items inspected may have a Standard or Standards covering them (e.g., IEC series) and if so then distill what you need from the Standards.

Hope this helps.

is the calibrated device must be verified

or what type of devices that need verification ?

and what difference between verification and calibration in example ?

hi..i agree to Andyn..im also handling the calibration and we have hundreds of equipment that need to calibrate, i have a couple of supplier that do calibration to some of the equipment that can be calibrated externally. Now, you need to identify whether your equipment can be done external or internal..for internal calibration, this one are surely need to have a calibration procedure..mostly the internal calibration are those equipment that specifically done for the particular processes you have like in our company. but for all those basic equipment like caliper, multimeter, any digital devices im pretty sure you can get some outside supplier that can do calibration.
i can send you some example of calibration procedure that i make for our company once i get back to office..but this is a general flow of our calibration..will send to you soon..i need to figure out first how to upload here..

Andy is correct to use an outside service if you need ASAP.

Another suggestion is to call the manufacturer for recommended frequency and methods. On devices like micrometers and such, the Industrial Distributor of that product could also help.

tech4arab,
Requested example:
Calibration-
Say that a micrometer is scheduled for calibration every 6 months. The instructions are to inspect for anvil flatness and measure a certified .5000" test block traceable back to the bureau of standards. Adjust the micrometer as appropriate, record activities and results.
Verification-
The calibrated micrometer is used by an operator to measure a part diameter. Every morning prior to use the operator verifies the micrometer by inspecting for damage, cleaning the anvils and zeroing out. He then records these activities and results on an inspection sheet (perhaps the checksheet he uses to document part inspection results during the shift).

Hope this helps.
