View Full Version : What's in a name?
AndyN 10th July 2009, 08:23 PM I was browsing another website and came across a person's name - 'Harley Davis' - and the thought flashed through my mind 'what were this person's parents thinking?' (Harley Davi{d}son?)
Then another, similar name came to mind! My father worked with a guy, in England in the '60's, called 'Austin Cooper' - a name I would have given my arm for back in the 1960's, because at that time, the original Mini Coopers were the car everyone wanted!
A friend of mine also gave his first born son the middle names 'Russell' and 'Brookes' after his (at the time) British Rally hero of the same name.....
Does anyone have any similarly 'odd' names they can share?

The Chicago Cubs' right-fielder's name is Milton Bradley, and there was a girl I knew in high school named Rose Budz.
AndyN 11th July 2009, 12:34 AM Thanks, Jim, that reminded me that when I was an MoD apprentice, we had an admin. whose name was Rosemary Chrismas. It was very difficult not to call her 'Merry Christmas'......:lmao:
My sons knows a girl whose name is Krystal Lenz!
JaneB 11th July 2009, 03:58 AM My sons knows a girl whose name is Krystal Lenz!
I wonder about her parents too. Might sound very cute to them, but I can't imagine how their amusement comes before saddling someone with a silly name like that for the rest of their life.
I was to have been named 'Janet' after a favourite aunt, but fortunately my parents realised that 'Janet Bennett' might have been a bit of a mouthful, and dropped the t. And I am suitably grateful.
db 11th July 2009, 07:46 AM well, I'm not sure how many of you know this, but David Bradley was the name of a tractor. Actually, it was more the size of a rotor tiller than a tractor. So, I am named after a tractor (it is far too embarrassing to say I was named after a rotortiller). :o

I too have a friend with a tractor's name - David Brown. He says is the 'DB' in the Aston Martin cars' model numbers; DB3, DB4, DB5 etc.......
bobdoering 11th July 2009, 11:32 AM The Chicago Cubs' right-fielder's name is Milton Bradley...
Yes, he palyed with the Indians at the same time as Coco Crisp.:tg:
GStough 11th July 2009, 09:27 PM Well, my parents thought it would be nice and sentimental to name me after something to commemorate their first date, which was a movie at the drive-in. The movie they went to see? The first "Gidget" movie with Sandra Dee. For many years, I never knew the meaning of my name :o, though I knew it was odd because I could never find it in any name book when we had to research the history of our names in school (yes, this really was an assignment in several grades).
Imagine my surprise years later (I was in my 30s) to find that my name is derived from "girl + midget = Gidget"......:mg:

You should be glad they didn't go to see "Psycho."
GStough 11th July 2009, 10:18 PM You should be glad they didn't go to see "Psycho."
Oh, I am, Jim!! :lol::biglaugh:
I actually was able to find all 3 of the Gidget movies and have watched them numerous times....Sandra Dee is my favorite by far...
Gofar 12th July 2009, 12:47 PM Then another, similar name came to mind! My father worked with a guy, in England in the '60's, called 'Austin Cooper' - a name I would have given my arm for back in the 1960's, because at that time, the original Mini Coopers were the car everyone wanted!
On similar lines there is the rugby player "Austin Healey" and Jensen Button also got his first name from a car manufacturer.
Anerol C 12th July 2009, 06:28 PM I knew a girl named Maria Felix like a famous mexican actress! (Well I'm in Mx may be this is not much sense for you)
Take care!:D:bigwave::thanx:
howste 12th July 2009, 06:52 PM A girl named Holly Golightly lived around the corner from me.
Stijloor 12th July 2009, 07:25 PM Friends,
Many years ago, when I lived in The Netherlands, I read about a girl that was named: Mari Juana. I do not know her last name. Not much controversy about pot in the Motherland...
Stijloor.
RCBeyette 13th July 2009, 12:25 AM I know a set of twins named Jack and Jill...nursery school must have been horrible!
I also went to school with a person named Erdem Ordem. Frankly, none of us could say his name without thinking of the Swedish Chef from the Muppets and follow up his name with "Bork! Bork!"
I work with a Daniel Daniels...and I have no desire to find out what his middle name is! *lol*
JaneB 13th July 2009, 05:41 AM I know a set of twins named Jack and Jill...nursery school must have been horrible!
I think secondary school is much crueller. Adolescents can be quite merciless. And any names (or initials for that matter) that can be laughed at will be. I remember one boy whose surname was Matthews, and whose first names were David Ian - you can imagine what ensued.
And if your surname was Taylor, I hope you wouldn't name your daughter Sandra Hortense Iris, for example.
Randy Stewart 13th July 2009, 07:54 AM I went to school with the Smith family they had 3 kids 2 boys. They were Jesse James Smith, Elvis Presley Smith and Shirley Temple Smith!
I had a friend in the Navy that wanted the middle name of their 5th child to be other. His full name would have been Justin Other Flores. His wife didn't let that happen.
Howard Lee 13th July 2009, 08:34 AM My name is Howard Lane Lee and my mother really appreciates it when I point out that my initials are almost H*LL.:tg:
somerqc 13th July 2009, 10:21 AM Fortunately, my wife was spared by her mother (although she goes by her middle name since mom didn't win the entire battle). Proposed name?
Gwendelyn Zelda....
Dean Frederickson 13th July 2009, 10:36 AM I worked with a girl her name is Penny Trick, maiden name.
tsmith7858 13th July 2009, 11:44 AM I worked for a fairly well known local amusement park at one point and the CEO at the time was Richard Hair.
The first time I found it out, he was on the patio of the restaurant I was working at and some one sent me out to to wipe tables because there was a reported "Nickname for Richard" Hair on a table. :mg:
Not sure what his parents were thinking. :nope:

ralphsulser 13th July 2009, 12:19 PM When I was in high school there was a doctor named Dr. Bonecutter in Shelby, OH. About 10 years ago I had a dentist named Dr. Stickrath, then later another named Dr. Lippet.
AndyN 13th July 2009, 12:59 PM Ralph, yours reminded me that I was married by (Canon) The Reverend Nunn (!)
Sturmkind 13th July 2009, 02:16 PM My father, Mr. Pease, an inveterate punster, originally suggested a first of Warren. I am ever grateful that I was christened Christian Pease, rather than Warren Pease.
Dan Armstrong 13th July 2009, 02:20 PM My wife once had a co-worker named Candice (Candy) Barr.

SteelMaiden 13th July 2009, 04:31 PM I went to school with Sandy and Sunny Beach, and also with Raini, Stormy, and Wendi Day.
JaneB 13th July 2009, 11:25 PM The boss at a furniture making enterprise where my grandfather worked had 3 supervisors, whose names were Ramsbottom, Sidebottom and Goatsbottom. (Names not all uncommon in the UK).
And I recall driving along a main road (well, what passes for a 'main road) seeing signs at intervals pointing to Lower Wallop... and then Middle Wallop and finally Upper Wallop. But I guess that's another story.
tyker 14th July 2009, 03:44 AM About 6 years ago I had a problem with my eyes so my doctor (who spoke with a thick Irish accent) decided to refer me to the eye department at the local hospital. I was a bit surprised to be told "They'll probably recommend you to masturbate". (My mother always told me that was why my eyes went funny in the first place) but the conversation became totally confusing with neither the doctor nor I understanding what the other was going on about.
Fortunately, I can report that on turning up at the hospital with a large box of Kleenex, I discovered the Consultant Eye Surgeon, Mr Bate, to be a thoroughly competent fellow.
Ady11 14th July 2009, 04:36 AM Similar to another, I once had the misfortune to have a supervisor by the name of Richard Head.
All I can say is he lived up to his name 100% :D
Geoff Withnell 14th July 2009, 09:29 AM I had a friend whose last name was Wise. He named his first born son Guy. No problem until he fills out a form last name first!
Geoff Withnell
Cari Spears 14th July 2009, 04:00 PM A boy who went to school with my younger sister was named Walter Melon. No kidding.:(
mguilbert 14th July 2009, 04:55 PM Went school with a boy whose last name was Hoar. Most kids picked on him saying his grandmothers first name was Ima. Then he changed his last name to Rust. most called him a Rusty Hoar after the name change. Also work with a guy named Shawn Beach.
Statistical Steven 14th July 2009, 07:59 PM There is always the famous email about a girl whose name is Le-a, pronounced Ledasha, the dash is not silent.
SteelMaiden 15th July 2009, 11:42 AM I actually have one about a classmate of my oldest son. Pretty unbelievable, and I think I might have written about it here before.
Pronounced: Ashely, just like Ashley, with an extra syllable. but it is written A s s h o l e. Poor girl.
work2much 23rd July 2009, 06:27 AM There is a young Braxton Hicks in our community, and a Tequila in my daughter's school.....
AndyN 23rd July 2009, 09:08 AM There's the old Reader's Digest story of the person who was only given the initials/name "RB Jones" (as in 'Arby'). In completing a (tax) form the thing was returned since it had no full first/middle names on it! So Mr. Jones put R (only) B (only) and the next communication was addressed to:
Mr. Ronly Bonly Jones........:lmao:
Joe Hahn 23rd July 2009, 09:16 AM Then there was the case of the Bernards, who couldn't agree on the first name of their son so they called him anonymous. He went by the nickname of nony.
Also, my mother's maiden name was Violet Ditzler. Think of having those initials.
AndyN 23rd July 2009, 09:21 AM What's wrong with naming a kid 'Tequila'?
It's right up there with 'Brandy' and 'Sherry' (or some other spelling) isn't it? And they were popular names at one time.......:lmao:

One memorable example was a hapless fellow originally (no doubt innocently) named Dung Heip.
Izoyd 18th August 2009, 10:45 AM I went to school with a girl named Misty Sparks......We later found out she became a stripper, which really didn't surprise anyone. That begs the question, the chicken or the egg.....
Jim Wynne 18th August 2009, 11:12 AM We were at a gathering of my in-laws over the weekend, and I was reminded that when this topic first came up I had forgotten about my wife's cousin Judy, who married a man whose last name is Schmudde (rhymes with "Judy"). When they got married I told my wife that if they had children of each gender they should name them Rudy and Trudy, but alas...
Vic de Beer 18th August 2009, 01:01 PM The strangest or most hippie names I've heard was from a couple that named their son: Zane (from the author) Bluefeather Stardust...... I think the kid chose Zane as his name
