These quality tools are used as follows:
5 Whys: A problem solving tool to help identify the root cause of a special cause event
Brainstorming: A tool used in quality for the generation of many potential root causes of a special cause event
Fish-bone or Ishikawa diagram: One type of brainstorming tool that lists potential root causes under multiple categories. The categories help to spur brainstorming and help to assure that no categories are overlooked.
FTA (Fault tree analysis): A tool used to help identify all possible causes for a specific failure mode
FMEA (Failure mode and effects analysis): A tool used to identify all possible failure modes associated with a process, a design, or several other possible techniques. The FMEA helps assess and prioritize risk and drive preventative actions to mitigate the risk.

Also consider using the info on the Quality Tools site, especially the Quality Toolbook (http://syque.com/quality_tools/toolbook/toolbook.htm). For each tool/technique, he's provided good explanations - what it is, when to use it, and some good practical examples.

Hello Anand,
Miner has provided very good links. There is another very good site on the subject by David Straker and his "Quality Tool Book" (http://www.syque.com/quality_tools/toolbook/toolbook.htm) contains most of the tools. The lay out of every chapter contains:
1. When to use it
2. How to understand it
3. Examples
4. How to do it
5. Practical variations
This I hope may solve your dillema.
