This is the lengthiest word in english, but not in dictionary. It is the name of a desease, and I first learnt about it in 1960 in my high school. To pronounce it you must break it into small words it is made of:

Pneumono ultra microscopic silico volcano koni osis.

Pneumono means pertaining to lungs, ultra means beyond, microscopic: one that can be seen through a microscope, silico refers to silica, volcano: volcanic, Koni: very small particle, osis is usualy ends a medical term.

So when a desease in lungs is caused by very tiny silica and volcanic particles, that are beyond the visibility through a microscope, the desease is called: Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoniosis

The lengthiest word in a dictionary is: Antidisestablishmentarianically
The lengthiest word used at Oxford is: Floccinocinihilipilification meaning estimating as worthless.
The lengthiest word used in a movie is Supercagifragilisticexpialidocious
meaning superb.(sound of music)
The lengthiest word in the world is SMILES, the distance between two Ss is one mile!!

Titin is the largest protein yet discovered. It's chemical name is 189,819 letters long and, depending on how you define a "word" is the longest word in the English language. It is not included in the dictionary - few lexicographers accept chemical formulae as words. For detail see : http://luminaryuprise.wikidot.com/longest-word

This is my favorite word--also learned it around the 60's. I wanted to be a surgeon and loved finding medical words that amazed and astounded others.

Thanks for reminding me! :D

aequeosalinocalcalinoceraceoaluminosocupreovitriolic (52 letters), attributed to Dr. Edward Strother (1675-1737) It was used once in describing a particular British spas water.

I wouldn't even begin to pronounce any of the word read in this thread!

You know the old jokes are the best.

Do you remember the one about the tourist visiting the village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. It's a dreary place but popular with visitors intrigued by the longest place name in the UK. So the tourist decided to get a coffee and write some letters home but unfortunately couldn't spell Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch so he said to the waitress "I'll give you twenty pounds to spell the name of this place".
"OK" she replied and pocketed the cash.

Umang:

I don't believe this is an actual word: Antidisestablishmentarianically

I believe it's Antidisestablishmentarianism

Which I too learned about in school, in England.

A patient may not need to hear a complex medical term to feel astounded. Just hearing the Surgeon's fees would be enough for the patient to get shocked

There are two more intresting longest words I found in my old diary.

1. 'Typewriter' is the longest word that can be typed, using keys of only one row of the keyboard.

2. 'Stewardesses' is the longest word that can be typed with the left-hand on the keyboard.(of course restricting left hand & right hand to their respective keys)
