I've been involved with 18001 since 1999 and I've never seen such an animal.

Do you actually have a safety background, formal training or anything like that?

Start your "checklist" here....What can cause injury or ill health? Then fill in the blanks................

HIRA = Health Industry Representatives Association?

Stijloor.

In this context, should be: Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

Good morning,

It would help to have more information. For example, what country are you in and to which regulations/standards you would like to address your audit.

Second thing is to verify what type of power plant you are asking about. Coal, natural gas, nuclear, something else?

Thank you.

Meanwhile, I have found an information source (http://safety.blr.com/reference.aspx?id=90542) about safety programs and self audits for you.

What kind of power plant?

Google has about 200,000 listings under powerplant safety checklist

Hi !

The OHSMS standards, national standards as BS OHSAS 18001:2007 or ANSI/AIHA Z10-2005 for example or the international one ILO-OSH 2001, don't formulate requirements about occupational risks identification and assessment methods.

But some standards propose general methodology on this subject (e.g. see BS 8800:2004 or ANSI Z10 annex). These tools are not reduced to simple “checklists”, and are not specific of such professional sector (biomass power generation or any other one).

Identify and assess occupational health & safety risks for your employees require observations and analysis methods about human working activity, tasks and working environment in your location, and need contribution of your employees.

Cordially .

Hi!

If for you a “safety audit checklist” is the audit of your OHSMS, then I answer you that a simple checklist is not relevant: to carry out OHSMS audit requires knowlege competences and experiment. But if you then need really a "checklist" then regards each requirement of your standard of OHSMS (Jennifer asked wich is yours) as a question…

If for you a “safety audit checklist” is rather a occupational health & safety risks identification and assessment, then see my answer to your other question about this subject.

If “safety audit checklist” is another thing for you, can you tell us what it is? Can you explain your objective?

Cordially.

(PS : I am curius, which is your function, your job?)

I didn't get an answer to my question: what country this is in. If you're in the U.S., OSHA can be a good source for packaged materials like checklists. I have posted a link that lists many sources. I have also seen versions of OSHA in other countries such as Britain and Australia. The materials I have browsed from these sources have been very good. Also look to universities, especially those in the U.S. that are experimenting with producing biomass energy. Very often universities put their materials online.

The unhappy fact is that doing this work successfully work requires knowledge in safety, and hopefully in the business of power plants. A safety inspection can be quite complex in that it can involve a range of subject such as chemical handling, Lockout-tagout and fall protection. A checklist can list these items for you, but it's no replacement for education and training.

What is your training? OSHA has 10-hour and 30-hour training that can educate without huge expense.

Hi Jennifer !

1- You said "I didn't get an answer to my question / what country are you in and to which regulations/standards you would like to address your audit…?" But what to answer you ? Each country propose certainly various extremely interesting documentary sources (ministries, universities…) specialized about occupational health & safety prevention…

But we have problem of the language used… In France for example there is excellent Internet sites as : inrs.fr (http://www.inrs.fr/) (Institut National de Recherche et de Sécurité = french research and safety institute) which proposes quantities of OHS prevention methods documents to be free downloaded, or legifrance.gouv.fr (http://www.legifrance.gouv.fr/) (free access site to all the French regulation). Without forgetting AFNOR Internet site (Association Française de NORmalisation = french standardization association). These documents are obviously compiled in French language. I observe that yourself you quotes only of English language documentary sources.

Regarding OHSMS standard I use the international one (ILO-OSH), because AFNOR did not wish create a national standard like the ANSI-AIHA in the USA or BSI in GB for example.

2- You said "The unhappy fact is that doing this work successfully work requires knowledge in safety". I add "and health" and I agree completly ! This is why I don't like the check-list* for OHSMS audit or to practice occupational risks assessment. A professional and tested H&S officer does not need checklists / these operations. And a checklist will not be enough to guarantee relevance of a beginner work… * but useful for limited specific or periodic checks conformity for example.
The difference is there: with a checklist we can find only what is in the checklist (quality and quantity)!
In other words: no analysis “tool” is able “to be astonished” as a human being in the event of unforeseen discovery! !

Bye.
