View Full Version : Understanding PPAP - Could some clever person give me some guidance?

I have some minor issues about the PPAP manual (4 edition). Could some clever person give me some guidance?

If the company produces very small series of products, how can you then make a significant production run of 300 consecutive parts as stated in 2.1 ?

In 2.2.9 Dimensional results.
As I understands it, the organization shall make sure that the dimensions of their products complies with their blueprints, and the measurments is made from samples from every production line.

2.2.11.1 Initial process studies
-Note 2. "The initial process study is focused on variables not attribute data". Whats the differens betwen variables and attribute data?

2.2.18.1 Part Weight
The weight of parts shipped shall measure the weight in kilograms to four decimal places. Is this possible? Never seen a industrial scale with this precision.

I'll try to help until a clever person comes along. :tg:

300 pieces is a default quantity, and might not be practical in some cases. Ask your customer for guidance when production quantities are small.

Correct.

Variables data is the results of actual measurements while attributes data is the results of pass/fail, good/bad evaluation.

Never seen a industrial scale with this precision.Such scales are fairly common, but not of the type used for measuring relatively large, heavy parts. Some customers don't care about the weight entry on the PSW, by the way, and if you do have big parts, customers might be happy with rounding to the nearest kilo. You have to ask the customer.

If a customer waives any of the default PPAP requirements, get it in writing.

Jim,

You are clever! :D

My advices,

If something in your case is unclear or illogical contact your customer. Explain him the situation regarding to significant production run.

You have to perform dimensional results for all characteristics on the design record and make a decision if the results are OK/NOT OK. If your product is made in different production lines you have to make PSW+ dimensional measurement + performance test results + material test results for every line. The same situation is in case that you have different tools (mould).

Manufacturer need part weight for determination the final weight of the car. You should weight 10 parts and enter in PSW average value of those parts.

Thanks for the answers. The situation gets a bit more complex because the company I´m working for doesn´t have any "customer". The Company produces a piece of specialdesigned "metaljunk" and then ask their customer if they would like to buy our brand new special designed metaljunk....

As the PPAP- manual is written for primarly automotive companies, I guess it´s OK to make some changes in those parts where you for example need cusomers engineering aproval...

Please do not get to hung up on every line.
For example

2.2.3 Customer Engineering Approval
Where specified by the customer, the organization shall have evidence of customer engineering approval.

Not every thing is a must
