View Full Version : Referrals - What does that mean - What is it about? Atul Khandekar 10th January 2002, 03:03 PM On the profile page for cove members there is an entry called "referrals". What does this exactly mean? -Atul. Marc 10th January 2002, 03:17 PM Technically the software has a feature which, when someone e-mails a link to a thread here (that "E-Mail This Page To A Friend" button), it sends a number as an identifier. That number is the number that corresponds to the user's 'identifier' number in the database. That 'identifier' number is, I believe, the next number in sequence from whoever registered just before you did. So - every user has a unique 'identifier' number. So - you e-mail a page to someone and they click the link in the e-mail which opens their browser and brings then to the page. That number is on the end and the software recognizes it. It sees that user number (yours - you sent the page to someone) and 'credits' your 'account'. I don't think I have it turned on - I can't remember. It wasn't a feature or statistic that I'm interested in. In short, for here it's a useless extra feature. Some sites that use the software may use it to give people certain credits in some way but I've never really thought about how one might use it. I'm sure you all can come up with a good reason though, so I'll check and see if I have it 'turned on'. pthareja 25th November 2003, 01:18 AM you don't refer the way people throw spanners like Follow this link http://elsmar.com/Forums/index.php?referrerid=3579 sent to THETOTALQUALITYMANAGEMENTSIE group THETOTALQUALITYMANAGEMENTSITE@groups.msn.com http://groups.msn.com/THETOTALQUALITYMANAGEMENTSITE/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=&ID_Message=152 This itself needs delebrations? Why bring in someone who may merely be a sucker, not a seeker willing to share? pthareja energy 25th November 2003, 08:05 AM While I'm not sure about the entire post, that's just me pthareja, I found it strange to enter the Cove through a kind of Q Site on MSN. Does it open up like a member would see it? Do you still have to register? I'm betting that you do. I'm not sure if you are referring to the guy who posted the link on MSN, but I would have to agree that without permission from Marc, it is being generous with what isn't his. But, it's the information age and the site is out there for people to do with what they want, as far as sharing. Another thing: If they have to pay to register to participate, is that a bad thing? Is there anything we do here that we wouldn't want others to see? I mean, we cleaned up our act as far as offensive posts, well, not as offensive. :vfunny: Maybe this is the plan? What are you trying to convey? Someone is taking advantage? Who? I apologize because of the language interpretation. You are the bi-lingual one, not me. :agree: (Added later-"Why not make this THETOTALQUALITYMANAGEMENTSITE agood one? Rather than pulling away members, please contribute some good things here.Thareja" Okay...it appears that Thareja {the other website member} is you. It appears that you object to the Cove link in that Special Quality Management site because you fear their members will leave there and visit here? I'm I getting warm?) Or am I still lost? I was also referring to the "professional appearance" as well as the "ease of navigation" with this Forum (as well as some other "niceties"). Not sure I'll be around tomorrow. In the event that I'm not, I'd like to wish everyone a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving :bigwave: . Go Lions! errrrr..... Go Packers! (Maybe I'll just have a couple of brewskis and actually enjoy a game without rooting for either one - although the Pack does have a chance at postseason) Toodles, Bill David Hartman 25th November 2003, 04:22 PM Go Lions! errrrr..... Happy Thanksgiving, Cove members! I know that it's probably only in the US that this is being celebrated, but I would like to extend my well wishes to all of those that contribute to this gathering of knowledge known to us all as the Cove; along with a BIG THANK YOU! Marc:bigwave: Randy Stewart 25th November 2003, 06:44 PM Have a great Thanksgiving folks. We really do have a lot to be thankful for. As for the game . . . I have to say I want to see the Lions win. But I have been a Packer fan ever since I read Jerry Kramers book way back when. I haven't qualified as a Cheese Head but I do enjoy watching them. pilchard 25th November 2003, 07:57 PM Any town named Pune has to be a fun place. :topic: pthareja 2nd December 2003, 01:36 AM Pune is a great place in India. about 200 Km from Bombay (Mumbai). I love "cove" as good as the other quality lovers love it. My 'sucker' { in my post above}was a knowledge sucker who does not wish to share. They ( suckers) only visit the cove, get useful info/ ideas and take off. Come join the cove and contribute! Love Marc, help and assist in retaining a healthy forum. I have been cribbing this at the other thetotalqualitymanagementsite, and thedemingforumindia to contribute sincerely and healthily yes it is the obligation of the group/ site manager to see/ oversee, that things conform to objectives, duly implied, when one has started a group. He should, when needed, support with innovative threads to enthuse a draw ( promoting renewed interest). I didn't want people to run off from there, like i still do write/ answer what ever querries people put in. but really for me it wasn't worth visiting to enrich my quest for knowledge. and I was unsatisfied, untill ajit khandekar showed me another escape route, when i posed him a problem related to quality in education, and he recommended me cove. he did not publicise on some other competitive group with his refer id. i disliked this point only! let me call the whole world to come and become members of cove, but i should do it in private mails. If I advertise in a news paper, with my refer id, am I entering shoes of marc.... has he allowed me? Quality is someones responsibility. but it beholds everyone. we ought to show up our responsibility truce! pthareja Atul Khandekar 2nd December 2003, 09:53 AM .... untill ajit khandekar showed me another escape route, .... Now, I wonder who this fellow is! :biglaugh: pthareja 3rd December 2003, 01:07 PM i am indeed indebted to you Ajit for showing me the way to this wonderful COVE. Also to mark for maintaining it and keeping it lively ( not only alive?). I know he must be going nuts working on its efficiency. A little while ago I was at http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?t=6472 reading some contributed threads, and I intend to agree with all of them in saying kudos for Marc. Thank you once again. Thareja Marc 3rd December 2003, 01:38 PM you don't refer the way people throw spanners like Follow this link http://elsmar.com/Forums/index.php?referrerid=3579 sent to THETOTALQUALITYMANAGEMENTSITE@groups.msn.com I missed this discussion for a while, which originally started a year or so ago. I believe the referral thing is turned on - no reason not to have it on. Feel free to use it. If you want to post a link in another forum (user group, what have you) it's up to you. There is no 'prize' or anything for referring a certain number of people so it's moot as to whether one posts it in another forum (user group, what have you) or not. My 'sucker' { in my post above}was a knowledge sucker who does not wish to share. They ( suckers) only visit the cove, get useful info/ ideas and take off Many people come here, get what they want and leave. In fact, MOST do and that was part of the original idea - well before there was a forum not to mention the attachment feature which just came into play a year or so ago. That people come here, get what they want and leave is expected and there is no requirement to participate. Nor do I have a problem with that. But - it is the reason I started charging for access to attachments. I saw hundreds of people registering and downloading attachments without any input - not even a post. One might say I encourage people to help each other out while considering my costs. I guess if I was smart, I'd set the site up as a non-profit organization... Marc 3rd December 2003, 01:47 PM I posted that link. AFIK I broke no rules on either site. You broke no rule(s) here. I don't know about MSN. Marc 25th December 2004, 06:12 AM This recently surfaced in a PM to me asking about referrers so I figured I'd bump it up. Feel free to use it but remember - No prizes or anything are involved.
