Would you tell me what is the difference between Repaired and Reworked in QS-9000 Language?

Rework - Fixing a nonconformance such that it meets drawing requirements.
ex. Hole is undersize - - re-drill to correct size.

Repair (requires customer approval) - Fixing a nonconformance such that the repair is acceptable to the customer.

ex. Hole is oversize - fill with weld metal and re-drill to correct size.

For what it is worth....I haven't been in a QS company for a couple of years now....

I think that it would depend a lot on what you are producing. We were a commodity supplier, there was no repair, but if we could rework something it typically was to another similar product. i.e. we could grind it to a smaller size, it was no longer fit for the order that it was originated for, but the customer also ordered a smaller size, ground product.

But, I digress. I had always thought of it as if you had to repaint something because it was not up to par, it was reworked. If you had to weld it because it broke, it was repaired. If you had to grind off the finish on portions, and then repaint, it was repaired.

Like I said, I think it all depends on what industry you are in, if you are supplying a commodity (or raw material), and what it is you are doing to make the product fit for use.

How is that for a fence straddling answer? I have to be careful, cuz I might fall and come down on one side of the fence or the other!:vfunny:

From an article in Quality Digest

* Repairing: This includes actions that make the product functional although it doesn't conform perfectly to the original requirements. Such a product may not carry the same warranty as first-quality products, for instance.

* Reworking: Actions that make the product conform to the original requirements. In the customers' eyes, this product is exactly the same as a first-quality conforming product.

Repaired products generally need approval by the customer to be sent.

I agree with the comments so far, the Glossary in QS9000 gives the definitions:
Repair (page 131) "Action taken on nonconforming product so that the product will fulfill the intended usage although the product may not conform to the original requirements." This would generally require a concession from the customer before shipping.

Rework (page 132) "Action taken on nonconforming product so that it will meet the specified requirements."

When writing procedures or work instructions careful consideration should be given before using the word repair. If an area is set aside for rework it should be called rework and not he repair area.
