View Full Version : The Cove Name Change from Cayman to Elsmar

Marc said: This is something I have had planned for a while. It's kinda a long story. I've had the Cayman moniker for 12 years now and have decided to change to something else.

Not a big deal. Just a name change which should not affect forums users in any way. The old urls will remain active (qs9000.com <-- since 1996 and 16949.com <-- since 1998) but will be switching to a 'main' url of Elsmar.com within two weeks.

Marc,

I'll understand if you can't answer, or don't want to, but I'm curious if this is related, in whole or in part, to the threatened lawsuit you mentioned a week or so ago. Do we have another reason to dislike 90% of the attorneys out there?

I just updated the link pointing to Cove from my site to read 'Elsmar' instead of 'Cayman'. Will the URL change form http://16949.com/forums/ to http://Elsmar.com/Forums/?
Thanx,
- Atul.

Marc's Cove remains no matter the name...but am curious if there is a meaning to Elsmar?

It's a combination of Elvis and Marylyn Monroe. Now is that so hard?:biglaugh: Sorry Marc, I let it slip!:ko: :smokin:

I believe Marc said he had hoped to retire some day in the Caymans, where he has his off shore bank accounts and that nice house!:p :ko: :smokin:

You mean Marc is going into business with Elvis and MM (both of whom have been reported dead, and yet have been seen in Grand Rapids and Cincinnatti)? I've also noticed Marc has a pretty distinct way of saying: "thank you very much";)

Ok - here's the scoop. I have always done some type of contracting or cousulting - since my last 2 years in high school. At that time I did EEG and EKG machine repairs and alignment (now more commonly called calibration). I called my business Field Bio-Electronics because i worked for a number of different hospitals (I worked 'in the filed' and the equipment I worked on was 'bio-electronic' in nature). I ended up doing quality work in the 1980's and about 1989 someone asked me why the weird name doing consulting and contracting in quality. "What does it all mean?" they would ask and then came the inevitable "Well, what does that have to do with what you're doing now?"

So - I was sitting there thinking what I really was doing was business systems design (yup - flow charts for ever!). At the same time I was young enough that I thought I might actually have enough money some day to retire and at that time I was dreaming of a 45' pilot house ketch (sail) and living in the Cayman Islands (we all have dreams). Soooo-o-o-o... I decided to change the name of my business to Cayman Systems in 1989. i changed it to Cayman Business Systems about 2 years ago or so - I can't remember but it was when the Cayman Systems router people threatened to sue me. I figured Cayman Business Systems was OK and got on with life.

In 1996 I got the QS9000.com domain name. In about 1998 I added 16949.com because of the coming TS 16949. QS9000.com is still active and will bring you to the site but it has been on the internet so long the SPAM situation was critical so last winter I stopped accepting any mail for QS9000.com. Now 16949.com is also spreading thin - tons of junk SPAM.

Right now I send ALL mail to 16949.com directly to my SpamCop account. It catches 20 to 100 SPAMs a day. It also cleans viruses. I get viruses every day now. I have a Mac so it's not an issue anyway, but it's amazing to watch. Every day for the last month to 6 weeks I've been getting at least 3 to 5 (many days more) e-mails with viruses! All to a 16949.com address.

I grew up in a small town in northern Kentucky called Ft. Thomas. I lived in the last house on the street - at 55 Elsmar. And that's where Elsmar (NOT Elsmer) came from. Do a search in any search engine for Elsmar and tell me what you find. I remember learning how to spell the street name as a kid so if I got lost....

Bottom line is I always liked the name and it reminds me of my Leave It To Beaver childhood. The search engine thing clinched it. Search for Cayman and 23,945,017,475,836 links pop up. Try Elsmar and - practically nothing. For those of you such as Atul who asked what this means as far as getting to the site - nothing will change. I'm not dumping 16949.com, but rather adding elsmar.com. So - in the next week - if all goes well - you will also be able to get to the forums by using http://Elsmar.com/Forums/ (note the Capital F in Forums). I hope that this addition will happen by next Monday or Tuesday. But the bottom line is no - you will not have to change bookmarks or anything. It's an additional domain name. As soon as I get it in the DNS system, I'll be changing my e-mail addresses as well - but - e-mails to my 16949.com addresses will be still be OK to use. I won't quit receiving e-mails sent to 16949.com for a year as a minimum.

So - not a big deal. No - I'm not being sued. It's simply time to change. Variety is the spice of life (or so some say).

I will admit that all the recent publicity about money hideaways in the Caymans did play a part as I now, and I bet a lot of other people, hear "Cayman" and think "Money Laundering" as opposed to "Retiring there on a sailboat" which was more what one thought (or at least me) in 1989. You know - retire in the islands with the beautiful young maidens (for the girls young - ummm, hunks?) and such. Always warm and sunny, no snow, etc. Things many old farts value.

Heck - energy thought I was a rich guy with a house in the Caymans and such not so long ago...

Next question?

Sure! Send me all you've got. I'll wash it right out of your life! I don't believe anyone should be burdened by extra cash. I can fix such a situation very quickly and cleanly!

First of all. I noticed that was Paul's first post. This guy might be serious Marc!

Second, thanks for the info Marc. You really didn't owe us an explanation, and this thread might have become quite fanciful, had you not. But we do appreciate it. Even though most of us haven’t met you, we consider you a friend, and as such we are always somewhat concerned when a friend has a major change.
:thedeal:

Now for a practical question. Should we change our links to your site to the new .com, or leave them as they are? If we should change, when should we make the change?

Marc
29th April 2002, 08:10 PM
I'm dead serious! Send me your cash, I'll run it thru the ol' Maytag with some Tide (my mom used Tide and - well, so do I) and then take it right out and - well, if I lose your laundry that's just a tough break for you because I have a sign right here that says "Not responsible for the loss or theft of green laundry"... :vfunny:

As I said above, it's not necessary to change bookmarks. For anyone who has links on their sites after next week you can change them if you want, and I'd recommend it just because i want the url to start showing links - in some search engines it's part of the rating algorithm - but its something that can be left until you're up for changing something.

That said, I expect it will be next week before the change is made. You'll know the change is complete and the domain name has propagated to the DNS servers worldwide when you start seeing my e-mail addresses in the forums change.

I just asked the people I rent the server from to add the domain for me and I know the domain is free (heck - the CaymanCove.com domain name was taken years ago, for example, but why would anyone want Elsmar.com?) so I'm waiting for a confirmation from them in the next couple of days (I'm not pushing because it's not a big deal). I though about taking elsmarcove.com and a couple of other domain names but I fighured why pay the money. Elsmar.com will do fine as soon as everyone learns how to spell it!

Hey - the Cove is the Cove (yes - cove.com and thecove.com were taken). Cayman, Elsmar, whatever. We're well into year 7 online. No one's gonna get lost.

I love the "how did you name your company" stories.

Marc may remember this - but for some of you others.... When I decided to leave the corporate world and venture out on my own, we were going on a cruise the following week. One of the agenda items was to "pick a name" for my biz while we were sitting around the pool - getting more creative with each umbrella drink, of course. All of the ports of call were viable candidates. The one that had the most potential was...of course...Cayman. Long story short - I did a quick check in the i-net upon return, and found, not only another biz named that but a guy doing what I set out to do. That was 3 years ago.

So what did I end up? Odyssey- Quality Management Solutions. My son was competing in Odyssey of the Mind that same year and went to the world competition. Quick Webster check of the word Odyssey was "a long series of wanderings, esp when filled with notable experiences and hardships" Seemed appropriate for this ISO business.

So much for todays trivia....

As I started the off shore banking thing, there was no reference to washing money with Tide. It was more in reference to escaping accountability to the IRS. See how things get started? :biglaugh:

But if you need some help with the drying and ironing of the money that is sent to you, let me know! I can be immediately available. I hear the fishing is great. Just don't touch the coral!

Marc,

In the "Karma is a Wonderful Thing" category... you're "friends" over at Cayman Systems just got a blast in the shorts by Scott Paton, editor of Quality Digest in the May 2002 issue, for poor service.

Reminds me of one of my favorite movie lines...

"Revenge is a dish best served cold... it is very cold, in space." Khan in Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan

Thanks for the info and link. I think I'll add my ISP for poor service. No answer to my e-mail for a week. Guess I'll have to most of the changeover myself.

Don't feel like the lone stranger, Marc. :vfunny: My ISP dumped 3/4 of the personal web sites from their customers' personal accounts and didn't bother telling anyone that it had happened. I kept getting e-mails from people saying our web site was down... Yet a check of my personal account showed all the files still in my account. Took the bozos 6 weeks to finally admit that they couldn't recover my files (even though they were listed in my directory) and that I had to reload them... grrrrrrrrr.
To top it all off, the right hand didn't know the left hand had a thumb up their @ss... :vfunny:

I've backed up the complete site and I do a weekly of the forums database. I just got a 'new' (read used) computer up and online running (ugh) Windoz 2000. I'm doing some figuring and will probably run it as Elsmar.com through TZO. My IPS sat on his butt and it totally unresponsive right now. Scary feeling. US$100 a month cheaper than any of the other comparables, but scarry.

Everything is pretty smooth right now so it's not at all like the nightmare last fall of switching ISPs.

Anyway - any mail changes are on hold until I get a few things figured out. I will be switching some stuff over to my office peecee but I'll let everyone know what and when.

For those in Cincinnati, Onenet has been sold again and apparently it is really a mess. Mail accounts closed out, web sited dropped, their web site can no longer be reached.

Oh, my! Maybe their quality was so good that they couldn't afford to operate any longer (NOT).

Well, folks, it's a done deal. The server is now resolving Elsmar.com as the dns update has gone through the caching nameservers.

Some things I 'planned' have changed and my other server is now http://CheechWiz.com

The CheechWiz.com server is on the desk behind me.
Elsmar.com will remain with my current host - http://gsp.com

As I mentioned earlier, you don't have to change anything because 16949.com and qs9000.com will still resolve to Elsmar.com They're all aimed at the same IP --> http://161.58.193.73

Well, there's a fire in the fireplace (I thought we were done with winter) and I'm gonna lay low this weekend. I just remembered Monday is Memorial Day!

Cheech,

Two things to be careful of. (maybe three). There is already a cheezewiz. It's an aerosol cheese spread that you spray on crackers. Second, Monday is Victoria day in Canada. Next, next, next Monday is Memorial day, so don't get too comfortable in front of the fireplace. But, to me, every weekend away from the grind is like a holiday. The third? I don't know about you. For me, it's a nice jug of my favorite concontion. I just couldn't let it slide, Amigo. :agree: :ko: :smokin:

I have one of the first Apple MessagePad 1000's. I believe it was the first 'true' pda, but it was too big and ended up failing as a mainstream seller. I rarely use it any more.

I have a PIM program on my Mac and I print out a 5 week calendar which I keep on a clip board. It was right in front of my face and I guess I was so busy catching up with e-mails and stuff after I got back from my client that I looked and for some reason was not registering the week of the 20th. I guess. Heck - I really feel stupid. But, I've felt stupid before and I'm very, very sure it will happen again - probably many times... :bonk:

I've got a web cam online taking shots about every 20 seconds. The page will auto-magically refresh for you every 20 seconds. If I'm sleeping you'll just see a picture of the CheechWiz.com server monitoring window.

I don't know about the sage part, but I've always had white or close to white hair. See http://CheechWiz.com/tosebo/1960-small.jpg - even at age 10 the white hair. Not much yellow but I don't have a color photo close at hand from back then.
